Watching Phil Hellmut tilt away a lot of money..., stdioh, 26. May 2003 09:19

Last night I was sitting around on UB observing an 80-160 limit Omaha8 game. Phil Hellmuth was sitting there being a giant fish. He was playing just about every hand, being massively predictable. Calling draws to half a pot, and betting hard with bottom 2 pair on the flop. He pitched about $5,000 inside of an hour. Anybody know what he was doing fishing around like that? Did he decide to just sit down and blow all his WSOP winnings? Does he even play O8 or was this some machismo thing?

Maybe he is setting the players up for a bigger kill down the road? Perhaps a little confusing play is necessary once in a while to put some doubt in the minds of his opponents? At that level, there are a lot of elements that I can only guess at, with a strong probability of being wrong. If he wins any more WSOP bracelets, he will be able to make a suit of armour with the metal ... :)

I can't imagine he's setting anybody up for a bigger payday. Those are the highest limits that get played there. And I've yet to meet anybody who'll sit down with over $10K and just blast it away for a good reason. He was the fish at the table. If he started playing well he couldn't recoup that money.

He's a great NL HE tourney player, but I think last night he was in self destruct mode. Hell, if I had that kind of money I'd have sat there.

I have played wit him many times at UB (not at those limits though). Phil is not known for outstanding ring game play, he actually loses probably more than he wins at UB. Why? I don't know for sure, but from what I have seen while playing with him he should stick to tournaments. And.......when he is giving away money the word gets out fast at UB and the sharks come swimming.

Actually, it makes perfect sense to me. Look at the big picture:

UB uses Phil's name. He's obviously employed or somehow contracted with them.

What better way to keep people coming back, playing more, and paying more rake, than to have them be able to say, "I played against Phil Hellmuth and KICKED HIS A**!"

Plus, he gets to play fun, without having to worry about who he's beating. Think about how much fun it would be to be able to play and have a goal of how much to lose.

I think it is just cool that Phil plays there. I'd love to just sit and watch a table that he was playing on.

He's probably getting paid whether he wins or loses, so he feels free to indulge his natural propensity for tilt. He must be getting paid enough that he doesn't really care about winning or losing.

I would imagine that they have a deal with him whereby he gets a salary to spend so much time at the tables per month and has to say nice things about UB and wear their clothes. I doubt very much that if he blasts away $10K he doesn't have to pay for it.

Well, yeah, I'm sure he's playing with his own money, I'm just saying they probably pay him A LOT for his endorsement. I mean he's on TV all the time wearing UB hats, and having famous players on your site is a big draw, so I'm sure they pay him for that too. I'm sure they are paying him over 100K a year, and he probably doesn't worry too much about a few K here and there. Maybe he was drinking or something, that turns even the best players into huge fish. Maybe he's still on tilt from his WSOP loss. Maybe he just sucks at O8, sometimes NL players have trouble adjusting back to limit poker.

I wish a poker site would pay me to sit around and play all day! I guess I'd better start my bracelet collection soon. LOL

When you can throw away $10K in a couple of hours, $100K doesn't go very far.

But yeah, I'm sure that they compensate him pretty well. Maybe not to the tune of $100K/anum though ... famous poker players aren't exactly famous basketball players. Hmmm....though we is a big name within their limited venue...I really don't know. It would be interesting to find out what they pay him.

I'm sure he doesn't play like that all the time? I mean it would seem like he would go broke even with all the endorsements, advertisers and backers. I don't know what to make of that guy, he's got all those WSOP bracelets but sometimes I wonder how he could possibly play as bad as he does. Like his first "bad beat" at the WSOP was when he was slow playing his AK on the flop with two suited and two connected cards on the flop. It seems like he should have made a big bet to get rid of the draw. I guess he might have been trying for a check raise. The third flush card comes out on the turn and the other guy makes a big bet and he CALLS??!!

His other huge loss was no fault of his own, I think he had QQ's against someone with a lower PP and the other guy spiked the set.

I think that the AK fiasco came after the QQ fiasco and I think that his judgement was clouded from losing to the JJ previously. And yeah, not only was playing it the way he did wrong, but moaning that the other player should have folded preflop was even worse.

As far as I know, Hellmuth is a partner in Ultimate bet, not an employee... that's the impression I got from his collumn on card player...
