When the deck is running over you, Schuster, 25. May 2003 23:42

Tonight in 3 hands, I was dealt AA and QQ which both held up for some decent sized pots, then made quad jacks on the turn with a KJ and won a decent pot with 2 who both held the big full house.

Next hand I was dealt KQo UTG + 2. UTG + 1 had called. Normally I wouldn't raise in this spot, but I figured that since the deck was running me over and my opponents probably noticed it, I went for it. I ended up flopping a queen, and the turn brought me another one. It was a nice streak.

I should note that I wasn't raising on any sort of superstition, or that I thought the deck was "hot" for me. It's just a lucky run of cards, and of course could end at any moment. What I was thinking was that my opponents might be thinking these things, and I should use this to my advantage if at all possible. Anyone else do these sorts of things? Is it worth the effort? After thinking about it, KQ probably wasn't the best hand to do it with, because I'm going to get called by an AK or AQ no matter what, and a K10 or Q10 or similar should fold to a raise whether the deck is running over me or not. Maybe with a hand like J10s instead? Or am I way off here? =)

You did fine, keep the pressure on when the deck has been hitting you. It's much easier for someone to make a mistake later in the hand when you raise, than if you just called preflop with that KQ. If I'm on your left, I'm not going to tangle with a player who is on a rush. I'll be mucking AQ to your raise here.

I love that play. Sometimes players get hot and they win with anything. I recognize this and am very weary to go up against a hot player unless I hold an extremely solid hand.

I would act very surprised at the table and say things like, "wow, I've never had a run of cards like this, ever!" or "I've always been lucky with cards." By politely instilling fear in your opponents, you'll see more of them folding -- for a little while at least.

You might also find a player at the table who feels compelled to beat you -- at any cost. These players will do the opposite of the players mentioned above. They will start playing every hand, raising with garbage, trying to intimidate you, etc. Make them pay for their emotional weakness.

"Play the rush" is a superstition, which ignores the fact that there is no way to know when a rush will end. Nonetheless it does have some value outside of superstition. The reason is this, when you are showing down a lot of good hands, you can bluff and semibluff a lot more effectively. You should tend to play your marginal hands a bit more aggressively, because if you've shown down a bunch of big pocket pairs recently, people will be more afraid of you. You might win by everyone folding, or you might hit your outs. However, you shouldn't try to force the issue with weak holdings or hands that don't have some outs.

There is a tremendous amount of truth in this. I once had a run of about dour pots in a row at the casino, and it got to the point that all I had to do (to win the 4th pot) was say the word 'raise' when teh action got to me. Everyone immediately bailed out... superstition is a great tool when you can get the rest of the table to believe in it...
