| I am on the button holding pocket jacks. A good player opens for a raise utg. I suspect he has nothing worse than AA,QQ,KK,orAk, maybe AQ. Two fairly loose players cold call behind him. I decide to smooth call, only the big blind calls. The flop comes QT3 rainbow. By the way, the game is somewhat loose and fairly aggressive. The big blind bets and everyone calls. I suspect the big blind who is a loose player is betting either top or second pair or maybe a draw. I put the preflop raiser on AK since he would usually raise with top pair top kicker or an over pair. The other two players I figure are drawing to something. I could easily be in the lead here but I wasn't sure so I just called, plus I didn't think a raise would get anybody out. The turn is a rag card, big blind bets everyone calls I fold. I figure I am playing with no outs. If there are draws out there, then a jack hitting the board would certainly help them more than me, especially the guy I have on AK. I am also starting to believe that since the board is still a rainbow one or more of the callers could have a Queen and didn't raise the flop due to a bad kicker. The river is checked down and the bettor shows AT for the winner. The preflop raiser did have AK. I through away the winner. Did I play this poorly? Should I have raised at some point? or should I have called and hope my hand was the best? | ||

| I play a three bet or get out type of poker with late position pocket pairs. Whether it's capped or not tells me much more about the strength of JJ preflop than a cold call does. Three bets also helps to eliminate the blinds, which is normally good when you have last position. The problem with three betting here is that it is going to leave you with the wrong number of opponents. You do have position, so by making the attempt to get out the blinds, you are also allowing yourself those small ragged safe flops to continue to be aggressive with (provided the early raiser doesn't cap it). I think you can see how the whole hand plays differently if you don't just cold call. Anyhow, you got a bad flop for JJ and I would muck at first opportunity. An overcard and two in the playing zone for cold callers is too much to overcome. A jack on the turn now is as much trouble as picking up a king or a nine. There are also probably fewer than the full ten of these cards live in the deck. Is the JJ still the best hand on the flop? Perhaps, but with that overcard you can't be as aggressive as you would like. I don't really want to put in at least a bet on the flop and turn just to find out. If I had three bet preflop, I can muck if it's bet to me or take a free card if they all check. Suppose I get a free look at an apparently harmless little card on the turn. Now depending on who bets the turn and whether I think it will become heads-up, I might put in a raise hoping to either take it right there or get checked to on the river so I can just show it down. I prefer two bets on the turn as opposed to a bet on the flop and turn, because I'm representing a slow play. Unless someone has QT, it could look very much like I misplayed a set. If it's the preflop raiser that bets the turn who gets the players in the middle to fold, I have some reasonable chance to take it right there and I might still have the best hand or maybe now a river jack doesn't kill me. If the aggressor bets and someone else calls or raises, I just quietly muck the jacks. | ||
