How does my card room compare to yours?, Big_Slick, 25. May 2003 21:16 | ||

| I'm curious if the rake at my card room is high or comparable to others across the country. Here's the break down... - 3-6 hold 'em game... blinds are $3 & $1. - You pay $3 rake for each pot over $10 (which is practically every hand.) - They charge a $2 admission to the card room. However, your admission ticket can be refunded for a food comp coupon equal to the game you are playing. So if you are playing 3-6, you receive a $3 coupon. 5-10 receives a $5 coupon. The max is $5. You need to play at least 3 hours but they are lax on this rule. I've been given a coupon after only an hour of play. - They do hold raffles for anyone who scores a flush or higher. I'm not sure what type of prizes are handed out. So.. how does this stack up? Am I getting raped or is this reasonable? | ||

| The non-incremental rake really sucks. This punishes an aggressive player whenever you take down a pot less than $30, as a larger percentage of your win goes in the drop. Estimating gas and time, I think it would be worth a two to three hour drive to a card room that drops $1 at 10-20-30 rather than what you face. The admission comp is bogus. You might not always want to eat there, and the prices are probably jacked up somewhat. Otherwise the food portions may be larger than you really want, and you're just paying for it anyway. Raffles for a flush or better aren't much either. It's just an inducement to play longer under already unfavorible conditions. Does a floor person have to come by the table to verify if someone is entitled to a ticket each time it happens? That can slow down a game. I would say the best thing to do is try to play tight in a loose aggressive game, so when you do win a pot you get whacked less. I would have to avoid any tight/passive or tight/aggressive table in that card room. When Foxwoods first opened they used to rake $3 on the flop and another $1 later in the hand. Many players complained, so they switched to a policy of rebating $1 in small pots. The first year and a half I played nothing but stud, refusing to get killed by an excessive hold'em rake. They're gouging their players at your club, maybe an organized protest with a veiled threat to boycot could make them realize they are just going to lose the core of their room. They need regulars just as much as they need tourists and occasional recreational players. Since change was possible at a place like Foxwoods, it has to be possible anywhere else. Try convincing overall casino management, if the poker room management is too stuborn. It can be done. | ||

| It could be worse, but it isn't that bad. Brantford (where I play) has a 5-10 as the cheapest game and they rake 10% up to $5 (Canadian). So essentially that translates more or less to a $3 rake at a 3-6 USD. The thing is that raking small pots is killer, so as long as it is super fishy you're fine, but if the game tightened up, it would be very hard to make money. Charging admission to the cardroom is just silly. | ||

| The first time I ever went to play cards there, I was dumbfounded when I was told I had to pay a $2 admission fee. It is ridiculous. I told the floor person to stick his $2. However, it's the only game in town so either you play there and pay the $2 entrance fee and the $3 rake or set your own games up. I'm thinking now that I'll write a letter... not that it will probably do any good. | ||

| Well, I guess every place is a little different. On 3/6 games, my card room rakes $3 on the flop (if the pot is over $10) and an extra $1 after the turn (if the pot is over $30). They also drop the small blind for the player's jackpots. (Bad Beat, Splash-Pot). In addition there is a no-flop, no drop policy (excluding the small blind/jackpot, that comes out before the deal). There is no entrance fee, and the food there is cheap and very good. For example, you can get a prime rib special for $5, including a soft drink. -Moz "Life is a dream. | Yup. They don't advertise the food comp thing (surprise, surprise.) I found out from another player. | ||
