One table tournaments- some hand/play questions, Easy E, 25. May 2003 19:57

This is post concerning 2 tournament tables- both were low-buyin, one-table, 9-player NL tournaments. Hands/games are in no particular order. My actions are at the bottom. Don't know much about the players in either case, at it was early on in both tournaments.

1) FIRST hand, get AcAh in big blind. EP raises T70, two callers. I raise T120 more, 2 of three call. Flop is 79Q, two spades. I bet T135, EP raises all-in. Should I call here?

2) KK on the button, I have ~T1200 (one of the leaders, initial buy-in was T800). I raise T60, 2 callers. Flop comes rag-rag-King-mixed.
Do i bet into checkers, or check myself?
What if the flop was two-toned?

ANSWERS
1) I did, and busted out against the set of 7s. With 3 callers, should I have gone all-in preflop? Should I have passed

2) I bet T135, all folded. If someone had bet or raised, I assume- incorrectly?- that I would drop the hammer for most, if not all, of my chips.
If the flop was two-suited, I assume I should be more aggressive with bet amounts, correct?

No. Here's why...

It is way too early in the tourney to start going all-in. Going all-in is one of the most abused plays in NLHE. You could be up against 7-9, 9-Q, 7-7, 9-9, Q-Q. In each case, you are now the underdog. You need to catch a 3rd ace to win (or get a pair to hit the board, depending). Not good odds.

You don't go all-in preflop either... especially if there is any chance that there are going to be 2 or more callers. The more people that go all-in, the less chance you have of winning.

The only exception here is If they have rebuy's. Some people use the all-in strategy early, hoping to get lucky and build a big stack. Maybe that's the way you want to play but you've got the put up some more money if you're unlucky.

2) KK on the button, I have ~T1200 (one of the leaders, initial buy-in was T800). I raise T60, 2 callers. Flop comes rag-rag-King-mixed. Do i bet into checkers, or check myself? What if the flop was two-toned?

The preflop raise was good. Yes, you bet here. Do not check and give 2 other players free cards.. this is how you lose pots. You've got the best hand at this point. Bet and either 1) make them pay for their stupidity if they decide to call or 2) Take the pot down right then and there. This is not the time to start getting cute.

Free cards breed flushes and straights and give other players hope. You're out to crush hope, not encourage it.

These are only my opinions.. hope they help!

I agree w/ Big Slick on both accounts.

I've had a lot of problem dealing with "all in jackals" lately in tournaments. i've found that if I can stay away from the big pots when i have a medium-strong hand (not quite the nuts) - I stay in the game A LOT longer. A 4-flush after the flop has a 35% chance of being made and a lot of people are willing to gamble here. I am not. Get em' in when you have the best of it - and protect it when you don't.

>>>I've had a lot of problem dealing with "all in jackals" lately in tournaments.<<<

I've noticed this too. I play a lot of sit-n-goes, and lately the cheap ones seem to have a LOT of crazies. It's a tough thing to do, because you loose a lot of blinds and limp-in bets, but you gotta stand firm and don't let them suck you out.

I was playing a $5 table last night, and one guy raised EVERY hand pre-flop... When the table caught on to him, he found himself up against only premium hands, and his chip stack started to go down. His next tactic: at about 500 chips, he started going all-in pre-flop EVERY hand. He stole a lot of blinds that way, but the next time the chip leader had a pocket pair, the crazy was knocked out.
