Qualifying Low in Omaha, Big_Slick, 24. May 2003 15:35

I'm a little confused by what qualifies as a low in Omaha. I understand that I have to use 2 cards and that there has to be 3 different cards, 8 or lower on the board.

I'm confused when my hole cards match the board cards. For instance... if the board reads A-2-5-6-7 and I hold A-2, do I qualify or does the fact that I paired the Ace and the two cancel out my low?

Thanks.

When you are holding Ace Deuce and one or more of those cards hits the board, if there are five consecutive low cards(under 8) out there, you will still have a low hand. However you will no longer have the "nut low" because you're ace/deuce got counterfeited.
With a board of A,2,5,6,7 the nut low would now be the 3,4(giving you the wheel, A,2,3,4,5). What you have to do would be to play off of the other three remaining low cards that are on the board and figure out your low holding by counting the cards backwards from highest rank to lowest. Example, you can't use the A and the 2 because you're holding them in your hand, however you can play off the 5,6,7. Just add the ace and the deuce that's in your hand and count backwards, and your low would be as follows: 7,6,5,2,A, and your high hand will be aces and deuces.

Anytime you hold low wheel cards and get counterfeited, to figure out what the best low hand would be to just simply count backwards from highest card to lowest card. More examples:

If you're holding A,2, you will have the nut low if there are at least three cards on the board 8 and under(unpaired of course) and neither of those cards are an ace or a deuce.(8,6,5,J,K would make the ace/deuce the nut low).
Simply take the 8,6,5 and figure out what are the two lowest cards you can hold to make that hand the nuts for low.
Another example where ace/deuce is not the nut low:
5,2,7,8,K. The nut low here would be the Ace three.
{ You take the three lowest cards starting from the highest of those three which would be the seven and count backwards: 7,5,2 and than the next two cards that would be the lowest to complete that hand would be the three and than the Ace, for a board read of 7,5,"3",2,"A".}

Many people get very confused when they are holding on to the Ace/deuce for example and than the Ace and/or the deuce hits the board. If there are three cards on the board that can complete a wheel(A,2,3,4,5) you must be able to read that so you don't wind up paying somebody off with Aces and a second best low hand.
If the board reads 2,4,5,x,x and there is heavy betting, you can be sure that someone is holding on to the Ace/Three for the wheel.

The best way to really understand all of this would be to play the game a lot so you can get good practice out of reading and understanding the board.
I can sit here and type 20 pages on the low hands and how to read them (and I do hope that I have helped you), however, by playing the game for yourself will give you an even better understanding of it all.
If you would like, I would suggest that you take a deck of cards, put out various of low hands on the board,(some that counterfeit your hand and others where you have a low and a pair and so on) and keep doing this until you have dealt out a whole mass of hands that will help you to read the board more correctly.(practice with a friend if you can).

Just remember, and I know this may sound confusing and that is why it's difficult to elaborate to much on this subject without explaining it to you 'live"(because trust me, that would be so much easier and I know you would pick up on it), but, practice doing this one thing and you will be able to figure out what are the best low hands for each and every hand that is dealt when matched up with the flop:

1.Count backwards from the highest of the low cards down.
2. Don't try to figure out your low hand by starting with the Ace. That will be too confusing.
3. If the board reads 8,6,3,2,4 than you must say to yourself, "what are the two lowest cards I can have to make this hand the "nuts"?
Well, out of the five possible wheel cards, the only two that are not present on that board is the Ace and the Five. You already have the 2,3, and the 4. This is just another way of figuring out the nuts for low.
Now if you held Ace 5,7, you would have the nut low(wheel) and the nut high (the eight high straight).
Just take your time when your playing this game and don't worry about taking a moment to read the board carefully. Most of the mistakes that players have after the flop is the ability to read the board correctly and they wind up costing themselves extra bets for no reason. Take your time. Practice at home and eventually you'll be able to read the board correctly all the time.
It took me (and this was after putting in 8 hours a day every day for a whole year) to truly understand and read the board correctly in all given situations.
It's the only game where counterfeiting your hand comes in to play.(it doesn't even come in to play in seven stud 8 or better; only in Omaha high-low). This game constantly has you thinking and than re-thinking so just hang in there. If you enjoy the game and want to continue with it, just keep playing.
I just love to hear when someone is interested in this game 'cause it's such a fun game and it is so easy on your bankroll. And when it is played flawlessly, you will have such little swings with your moolah!

An experienced and skilled Omaha player has a huge advantage over his opponents(more than any other game IMO).

Good Luck

I've only just started playing the game... just free tourneys. I've figured out already that a knowledgeable player can really mop up.

Thanks for the great post.. of course, all you're posts are great.

How is your trip to Vegas going? Been getting some good cards?

Hello,
So far, so good.
I've only been here a little over a week but have no complaints...poker has been beddy beddy gooood to me!!

If it gets any hotter here, I'm gonna scream! Damn, 100 degrees is plenty, really! I guess I can say that I'm looking foward to my visit to California already. It will be much cooler and I just love playing there. But Vegas is cool, too, just in a different way!

Take care,

You still have a low, but a very poor one. If the board is A2567, then the nut low is 34. Your A2 gives you a A2567 low, so anybody with a three and another low card, 7 or less has you beat and anybody with a 4 and another low card 7 or less has you beat. For instance 45 would make a low of A2456 and 37 would make a low of A2357. So yes, you have a low, but it is a very very poor one. The only worse qualifying low would include an 8. If you had A8, for instance, then your low hand would be A2568.
