New World Champ! His bio at pokerpages says he won a $40 tourney there to win his seat in the WSOP. Truly amazing. Congrats!

There is some good video of the WSOP contestants at www.gutshot.co.uk, though their server crashed from the hits when they tried to broadcast the final table play ... :) One video has Phil Helmuth describing himself as "this jet, way up there" being shot down by someone with a pistol ... very strange, but the pressures of the final tables ... a person might end up quacking like a duck.
Who is Chris Moneymaker and what a great name for a World Champion of Poker!

From what I understand, he is married and the father of a 3-month little girl. He works two jobs and is from Nashville.

He has never played in a live tourney before... only internet events. In fact, that is how he made to the WSOP... through an internet tourney.

If Phil had a problem with Robert winning last year, you should have an aneurysm over Chris.

One more things... I'm guessing that "moneymaker" is his nickname on the internet poker rooms. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure that's his real name. Pokerstars said he won a FPP tourney or some other satilite through that site. I can't remember his online name though.

His online name is money800 and it appears he has never played a live game before, if the article at http://www.pokerstars.com/?source=pokerpulse is to be believed. The New York Times Article is cool (but you have to register ... free) http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/21/national/21POKE.html?pagewanted=1

Hey...they mention Krazy Kanuck in that article. I knocked him out of a cheap live tourney earlier this year in Toronto to garner first place. Best opponent I've faced and I think he's going to be an up-and-comer on the big poker scene.

When there were only two players left, Moneymaker offered to chop the prize money with this guy and he had three times as many chips.
Well, this guy (who was completely arrogant said to Moneymaker, "No, I will beat you outright").

Moneymaker proved to be the champion this day...Gotta love it!

I don't see how anyone that is a 3 to 1 chip underdog can pass up on a split! Pros must have some ego on 'em.

Any serious poker player will tell you that it is not about the money... it's about getting that bracelet and being crowned the best poker player in the world.

I'm not too sure how it works, but it sounds like 4 poker was saying they'd still play for the bracelet and chop the cash. No?

I would have said, "Lets each take 2 million and play for the rest and the bracelet."

Well, I have heard a lot of real serious poker players say: "It's the money", and most pros refer to poker as money management, rather than card management. Any pros care to throw thier opinion in here?

Old adage goes like this: "If someone argues that it isn't the money but the principle of the thing, ... it's the money."

I think that most players with the exception of a few would have chopped the money but continued to play for the bracelet.

Winning the bracelet is a huge part of playing in a tournament and for some, that is more prestigous than anything else. Of course the money is the primary factor but when all is said and done, the bracelet gives you "bragging rights" that can last a lifetime.

If I were in that position, I would have definitely taken Moneymaker's offer but would have played for the bracelet for sure; you have to.(but I am not a tournament player so I can't really say that that is the best approach to take for that may lessen the importance of the tournament just a bit and take away from the thrill of the victory).

So I don't think you can talk too badly about the guy because he didn't want to chop because even though that may show a sign of arrogance thinking that you can beat someone just because he was not a well-known player, it also allows the tournament to play out in its entirety without any "deal making" going on.
IMO, there should be no deal making at all in the Big Event at the WSOP.
That may be a hard request to ask for being that there could easily be conversations made away from the table, but if there was a way for the tournament to play out where there was no chopping and/or deal making, the "sport of it all" would be much more challenging and more interesting to all; participants and spectators.

That's just my 2 cents.

I'm usually happy to deal if I'm short-stacked at a final table. However, if it was the WSOP I wouldn't feel right about accepting a deal. Especially since even second place is a huge chunk of change. Also, I don't think dealing is necessarily good for the sport of poker. When I'm at a final table, I'll take a deal if it is favorable to me; however, in the tournaments when I don't make it to the final, I'm always left a little bit dissappointed when the last players make a deal. As a spectator, I want to see them fight it out to the end! Deals are just so anti-climactic!

In fact, I've been considering just having a no deal policy, but I'm afraid if I become known for that, other players might target me to get rid of at the final tables, so that they can deal.

I am almost certain that Daniel Negreanu does not make any deals when he's at the final table.

Don't even worry what the other players may think. If you chose to not make any deals than stick with it. If you're a strong enough player(like Daniel is), than you won't have to think about what the other players strategies will be. You'll be the one that they will be worrying about! And heck, even if you're not a real strong player yet, you should still do what is right for you and what you believe in.

I think it shows a lot of integrity when a player choses to "stick to his guns" and plays the tournament the way HE feels it should be played and not by the way everyone else may chose to do so.
There's still a few who do not make any deals and I definitely respect them for that because regardless of what their chip position may be, they always play it out to the finish.
