I have noticed that I am doing some tells. I just re-read Mike Caro's book on tells to verify it.

Yup I am doing it.

Now my problem is, how do I stop? If you know you are "telling" what is the best way to stop yourself from doing it?

Thanks,
Don

Practice doing things at the table the same way no matter what you have in your hand. If the tell is a betting tell, then each time you bet do it with the same hand, stack the chips the same, etc. If it is a looking at your cards pre-flop tell, then always stare at AA for the same amount of time you stare at 72o before deciding to act. If it is a voice tell, then practice saying check, bet, call, raise in the best monotone you have.

Effectively, perfecting "rote" behavior in your actions is the best way to stop telling your opponents whether or not you are weak or strong in any given situaion.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I will work on this over the weekend and hope to fix it.

Re-reading Mike's book was a great help. I normally re-read all of my books once a year but I might start doing it every six months.

They do help a lot. I always have at least one book going in addition to readin CP religously. You can never stop learning about this game...

Until you are able to rid yourself of tells, start by hiding them. Wear sunglasses and a hat.

I find that you can always see where the 10-20 tables are in the casino without looking at the charts. This was first pointed out by Wren. Just look for the hats and glasses. Nobody at 5-10 thinks about the tells they give off and nobody at 50-100 has tells anymore (except maybe the odd tuna), but at the 10-20 everybody is aware of their tells and trying to hide them so the have hats and sunglasses. I recently stopped wearing sunglasses (I still wear the cowboy hat of course), but I'm thinking of going back to them. They really can't hurt and lots of world class players wear them to the table.

The other thing you might think about doing until you get used to it is scripting your actions. On every hand, don't look at your cards until it is your turn to act, look for the same amount of time, and always act with the same motion. I hold chips in my hand at all times so I'm never tempted to reach for my stack at the wrong moment.

Great ideas. I already wear a hat and have ordered prescription sunglasses.

I never look at my cards until they bet is almost to me and I am always shuffling my chips.

Scripting what I do sounds good. I might try it this weekend.

Thanks again to all for you suggestions.

Hi Don

Set up a system that you do them same thing the same way every time. Over the course of time it will become habitual!

Roy,

That's what I am trying to do but most of the time I get caught up in the game!

My wife and I are headed to Vegas in late June. Do you play at the Mirage often? We are staying across the street from there.

Thanks again.
