Limit Tourney Structure Quesiton..., bruh, 22. May 2003 06:43

My friends and I are thinking of playing a limit half O/8 half Hold 'Em tourney this weekend but are a little unsure of what structure to use. From the few tournys we've played in the past, they seem to take forever. Wondered about blind structure and how often blinds/antes should go up? Sounds like our group will have 6-8 players and we'll probably want to play a cash game afterwards, so (i guess) the quicker the better. We don't want the tourney to take too long, but also don't want the blinds to go up so quickly that you risk getting blinded out if you don't catch a hand in 10-15 mins. Any suggestions?

Play a blind structure during the Omaha, and No Limit Hold 'Em. Any NL cuts the length of any tourney.

The shorter the tournament, the crapshootier it'll be. You have to balance the fact that quick tourneys don't give you a chance to catch many hands with the fact that long tourneys take up a lot of time. For it to mean anything related to skill you really should take about 5 hours for your tourney. If you're looking for an appropriate blind structure, look to the Tex's (aka Texas) TEARS format.

Stdioh,

Can you tell me exactly how the TEARS structure works? I've heard of it before but am not exaclty sure how it works. The last few times we've played we've raised the blinds every "x" number of hands but that seemed to take a good while. You're right in the fact that skill can only be used in a longer tourney and most of the guys that will be playing are calling stations that chase every hand, so it will be harder to catch cards in a shorter tourney.

ok...here's a blind structure that is more or less TEARSish. Basically TEARS says: every increase should average a 50% increase in blinds and should be between 33 and 67 percent. Every round should be the same length of *TIME* (not hands). You should start with 'enough' chips.

I would say that for a small tourney like that, you could make it 20 minute rounds, start everybody with T300 and elevate the blinds by:
1-2,2-4,3-6,5-10,10-20,15-30,25-50,... since you're doing a small tourney with only a few people and you want it to be quick, this ought to work out fine.

When (if ever) should you throw in an ante? I'm planning a NL tourney myself and trying to figure out what structure I want. I think throwing in an ante at some higher level will help speed the tournament along. If it gets down to a bunch of blind stealing at least there is a little more at risk.

For a small tourney you don't really need antes...they can make it a little more fun by bringing more action later on.

You might bring in antes of one red chip for each green chip of small blind, so have the structure go to 25-50(5), 50-100(10), 75-150(15), etc. It is really up to you, but it isn't necessary. If you were playing a 40+ person tourney then it would make more sense to bring in antes later on because it really puts the crunch on small stacks late in the game.

Though I won't comment on your structure (I didn't read it) I think if your 6-8 person tourney takes 5 hours, you need to step it up a bit. Increase the blinds or something!!
He stated that they want to play a cash game afterwards.

My last home game tourney had 12 people, was Limit, and only lasted 4 hours. Sure, lots of fish, but the 12 place finisher had to wait for such a long time!!

Yeah, good points. I don't want to chase anyone off by having them wait around for an hour or longer on the tourney to finish. We did our blinds in the TEARS system last time and our tourney took a good while, so we might have to adjust our blinds a little this time.

Well, everybody has different priorities with a tourney. I like them to take a long time because NL hold'em tourney are my game. The longer it takes, the less crapshooty, and the better my chances of making the money or winning.
