Vegas - What/where to play, donrhem, 22. May 2003 05:19

We are headed to Vegas next month. I currently play 15/30 Holdem at a BM casino.

What is the difference (if any) in the game in Vegas versus another Casino (i.e. St. Louis).

I also like to play some small tournaments (limit and no-limit). Any suggestions on what and where to play?

Thanks again for all of the help on this board!

I have played 15/30 at Mirage and Bellagio and the games are pretty good. I don't know what your game is like in St. Louis, but 15-30 in Vegas is where you start to see some pro's or semi-pro's so I find the games a little tougher than what I see at Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun in CT.

As far as tournaments, I know the Orleans holds a low buyin NL tournament on Friday night. As for others, grab an issue of Card Player Magazine...in the back they list all the weekly tournaments in Vegas.

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response!

I figured it would be a tougher nut in Vegas. We are staying at Harrah's (mostly comp from my Crap days) since I thought the Mirage was a good place to stay.

I have never played no-limit holdem so it should be interesting:-) I just ordered a few books on no-limit like "Championship No-Limit and Pot-Limit Hold'em".

If you've never played NLHE, do yourself a favor... go to pokerpages.com and play in some free tourneys. A lot of the players are boneheads but it will be a good experience.

Pokerpages has a detailed tournament listing service (free!) which I used to cruise the poker rooms on my last vacation in Vegas. Best places? Well, ... I hit the early tournament at the luxor, then moved on to the Monte Carlo. By the way, the Monte Carlo is a nice, small, friendly room, but they have a honking big "Wheel of Fortune" slot machine, and half-way through the tournament, after hearing "WHEEL OF FORTUNE" shouted from the inanimate coin box a few hundred times, I was ready to jump out of a window, ... As if you could find a window in a casino. Avoid and keep your sanity. I liked the little Sahara poker room for aggressive, loose play. I picked up $35 there in my last half hour in Vegas. Friendly and old-Las Vegas style.

Ok, that said, the Mirage rules. Super comfortable, full range of games, table switching is easy, no prop players (hmmmmm), and great poker. Start in the 3/6 Holdem to warm up for a real game.

I won a satellite for the evening tournament but chopped for cash due to a dinner engagement that evening and the tournament was very challenging. I recognized a few players from the WSOP satellites at Binions, so it was a friendly "the-sharks-are-grinning" type of crowd. The 3/6 is easy, recreational cash and a great warmup. You can recognize a few people from Cardplayer there. You "will" be gutted like a fish if you do not suspect slowplayed high pairs. Hope this helps.

Bruno Fitoussi is in the lead of the WSOP with a "mere" $671,000 followed closely by a pack of bracelet toting gazelles! Go Bruno, Go!

In Vegas the good players are tougher than most other areas of the country...We do however have a lot of tourists that compensates for that negative. The Mirage has good 10-20 and 20-40 games. The Bellagio spreads 8-16 15-30 and 30-60. As a general rule the Mirage has softer line-ups.

Good Luck :-)

Roy,

Thanks for the information. Since we are staying at Harrah's we will probably play at the Mirage.

The 15-30 levels and up is where you start to run into the professional players however, if you have a strong game yourself there shouldn't be any reason that you couldn't compete as well.

I think the $20-40 game at the Mirage is the stone-cold nuts; with many tourists all the time.

If you are going to be in Vegas for part of July(I'm not sure how long your visit will be), The Orleans is having a tournament and although the majority of their side action will consist of high-low games, the hold-em games during that time are pretty good as well.

Good Luck and have a safe trip.
