UPF tournament - details, stdioh, 20. May 2003 10:08
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
Wow. Lots of feedback and it is just about all the same. Seems everybody says, "Sure as long as it is under $50."

I'm thinking that to encourage more people we should maybe just make it $20 ... nobody has yet said, "I'll only play if it is $50 or more."

So hows about we fix it at a $20 tournament. Now it becomes a question of time, day of week, and most importantly site.

Let us use microdemocracy to find a place first. Seems the popular options are:

Ultimate Bet
Party Poker
Planet Poker
Poker Stars
Paradise Poker

I'd say that for a time, we should aim for 10:00pm EST. That lets anybody on the West coast play after dinner, anybody in the East play before bed, unfortunately, anybody in Europe is going to have to be up very early in the morning to play, but at least it wouldn't be during working hours. Either that, or on a weekend during the day. For the sake of limiting discussion, lets say Saturday at 3:00pm EST.

So here's what I want from everybody who wants to play:
Vote for exactly one of:

Ultimate Bet
Party Poker
Planet Poker
Poker Stars
Paradise Poker

and exactly one of:

Weekday at 10:00pm EST
Saturday at 3:00pm EST

and exactly one of:
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday

Whichever site wins will be where we play (assuming that they will accomodate us)
If Saturday wins, then Saturday it is. If weekday wins then the most popular weekday will be the day. Then it'll probably take a couple of weeks to set up and we can all open accounts and such and then we can play on the designated day.

I really hope that Roy and Mike will be willing to join in the excitement as we'll all then be able to claim to have played them and have stories about it to tell.

Looks like we should be able to get over 20 people participating so we'll have $400+ in the prize pool. If we pay top 3 that should work out nicely to $200, $120, $80 ... more if we get more people. You'll have to trust me to figure out the structure with whatever site we pick.

So get your votes in now.

Payouts you have suggested all look good to me, and I trust that you will be able to come up with an acceptable blind structure.

Do you plan on attempting to restrict it to persons here, and if so -- How?

restriction is easy. I just need to get people who want to play to post here and give me their names on the site. Then I can tell the site who is playing. If anybody really wants to join in, they can post here once and play...we don't have to be nazis about it.

Absolutely! I'm not at all in favor of restricting it to "only those who have posted more than X times, in X threads" or anything like that. My concern was more to make sure that persons not using the same handles here as they do on whatever site wins out are not excluded accidentally.

That's a good point. I'll probably have to create an account at whatever place is chosen (I currently only have PokerStars and Lucky Nugget accounts), so I'll try for my name here but you never know if it will be taken or not. We can have a mapping thread where people can post what name they play under at the chosen site.

I'll make sure that everybody who is going to play gives me the names of their accounts, but that can be dealt with later. First we need a format.

Here are my votes:

Ultimate Bet
Saturday at 3:00pm EST

JunglingS asked about closing the tourney, and blind structures, so here's my 2c for what it's worth:
I suggest a NL hold'em, 1000 chips each, 10/20 blinds to start, increasing every 10 minutes. UB can create a "By Invitation Only" tourney... it's just a matter of whether they are willing to deal with us.

Looks like stdioh has started to take it on himself to set this up. Let me know if there's anything I can help with -- Sucks to get stuck doing more than you really care to.

BTW, thanks for pointing out the Invitation only tourneys, I had overlooked this.

Oh, and if that is indeed the way to do this, we should set up a way to correlate our screen names here to the ones we use there. Believe it or not, I don't always use JunglingS.

My vote is for Party Poker on a Saturday. I think I could find a PC somewhere that somebody will let me log in on. $20 buy in is cool. My vote is for a limit tourney with longish rounds, at least 20 min would be cool, with blinds going up at a rate so that the tournament should last 4-5 hours. I'm cool with no limit as well, however, I think we have more limit players here than No limit, so limit seems the fairer option for more people. When the blinds get to the higher limits, you're pretty much into the NL strategies anyway at the last table.

Stdioh, way to go making this happen!

Let's hope! My results have been running good lately, no denying that, but I have to admit, I might've been getting more than my fair share of pocket pairs lately, so I haven't let my head grow too big! Actually, I just want to play the UPF tournament for bragging rights, normally I would avoid tourney's with a strong field of people who are actively trying to improve all of the time. Should be run.

Duely noted. Hmmm...I'll consider that when picking a site. Can you use netteller though? A lot of sites use that and it gets money directly from your bank account.

Also, if you have a checking account in the US or Canada, some sites will use the Citadel system to let you "write" an e-check. This makes the funds immediately available directly from your checking account.

The only one I am sure uses this is UltimateBet, but I know I've seen it elsewhere as well. Just can't remember exactly where at the moment.

The only problem with Neteller, is that if your account is currently empty, it will take four days to clear an ACH deposit into the account, unless you want to pay the $18 for an InstaCASH transfer, but I don't think anyone would do that for a $20 transfer.

I think this info is moot for me, as I think that I alread have at least $20 in my Neteller, leftover from the last deposit I made into Pokerroom.com.

Having looked around at the possibilities i think that Poker Stars would be the best place to have it as they have a lot of private tournys that require passwords to enter and the other poker forum has their " King of the Zoo " ( i think ) comp there.

Everyone seems to like $20 entry and i actually think you will find a lot more then 20 people entering !

Saturday at 3pm sounds good as i am in England so 10pm sounds a bit like a late night but either way.

Stdioh if you want to sort it out cool i reckon it wil be a laugh, if not drop me a line at chasepoker@hotmail.com and i will get in the case.

Hopefully everyone will play the event in the light hearted nature that it is intended, i think it will be cool and the gang.

Hey, since Planet appears to be offering it to us, we might as well take up on that. That should put an end to a real need to vote for a casino, and if they set it up, that should take some burden off stdioh. That way he can sit back and enjoy with the rest of us.

You can call me anything you'd like, JunglingS. I just don't care much for "Crazy Mike," which is what Doyle Brunson called me in his book in 1978. But you can call me that, too, if you must.

I play with a pal who goes by "Maniac Mike", not because he's a maniac, but because that is the image he wants to foster. I wouldn't mind at all if somebody started calling me "Crazy Duke" ... though a few of the dealers at my casino have me nicknamed, "Hollywood" already...something that I'm not anxious to have appelled to me, lest my odd hollywood or antihollywood become ineffective.

It could be worse.

There are a few who have taken to calling me "Raght Dawg" (Oklahoma style southern drawl required) after an old pet of my father's (he's the one from Oklahoma) and his story about the dogs name being because "when she wanted somethin', she wants it and she wants it raght naow!"

So after I made a rush with a few bluffs (during a house game in which my dad had told the story) it was decided that I wanted somethin' and I wanted it raght naow!

Excellent. It seems that Planet has been a lot less popular on here than UB, Party, and Stars, but I think that since Planet has facilitated this forum, it is only right that they get first crack at the members as customers (though really this is second crack). While BARGE is a real accomplishment for RGPers, I think that we should not lump ourselves in too much with them. Call me snooty, but I think our forum has a lot more taste and class (and much fewer flames and trolls) than RGP.

I don't really have a preference except to say:

Please allow enough lead time for anyone the doesn't have an account setup and funded at the chosen site to accomplish that.

Aside from that, deal me in.

Many of you won't recognize my name, because I haven't posted for several months. However, I have posted on UPF several times, and I'd like to play in the UPF tournament. I like Stdioh's idea of only a twenty-dollar entry fee. Fifty dollars would be too much for me, since I can't reasonably expect to finish in the money.

I like MozMan's format suggestions. Would there be a problem with the blinds increasing every twenty minutes rather than every ten? -- The results would be less of a crap shoot, and the estimate is for only about twenty players. About how much longer would the tournament last if the time were increased?

I have a question regarding the example of twenty people paying $20.00 and producing a $400.00 prize fund. Shouldn't the hosting site be paid for the service? Also, Stdioh, I'm sure no one would fault you for keeping an administrative fee providing it was agreed in advance.

What's the name of the game? Texas hold' em gets my vote. My other votes are as follows: Planet Poker on a Saturday at 3:00 pm EST. We'll need to know the dates with sufficient time to clear our calendars and to make payments and have checks clear (if some payments are to be made by check).

JunglingS, Jav and Stdioh discussed the publication of our handles we use on the game sites. I recognize the necessity of our knowing who we're playing -- otherwise, why have a UPF tournament. On the other hand, I'd rather not have my handle published on the web. If I'm the only one who feels this way, we should ignore it. Otherwise, could we distribute the list by email, so it's available only to the paid players? I'd be glad to perform the clerical work this would entail.

The name game is getting a lot of pub, so I'll add my 2 cents.

1. If we play at a site where someone already has an account, they probably won't want to put their real handle in. Is this what I'm hearing?
2. Anyone new to the site can open an account, and include UPF in their handle. No mistaking that at the tournament table. More on that later.
3. If it's easy to change names at one site, maybe we should look to that site, as current account holders can go back and forth with names as they please. Not mention everyone swapping out names each week/month we play. The only way we'll know who's who is when they speak up in this forum. Nothing wrong with that.
4. I don't have accounts at any of the the choices, so I don't really care, let's just not make this the delaying factor.

Finally, as for keeping it a UPF table only........I still think that by the time we identify a site and time and table name, it will be fine. If someone outside this forum unknowingly enters in, so be it. I hate bringing it up as it makes me look like a punk, but remember the scene in Rounders when the business men walk to the table filled with all the players from the Chesterfield. We bring that up everytime we have a new guy at our home game, so it struck me as appropriate.

I think that we'll be able to get a private tourney set up, so I don't think it'll be a problem. Anybody who really wants in could just post here and ask to be in...I don't think anybody's going to want to be that exclusive with it. I like the idea of people who don't already have accounts to make an account called UPF_username...so that I would be UPF_stdioh, etc. Of course for those who already have accounts I think it would be a bit cumbersome to have them changing their names, but of course they could tell us who they are in the chat window, etc.

Thank you, Stdioh. I already have a Planet Poker account, but I'll be sure to identify myself in the chat window during the tournament. Excellent idea.

I require no fee - I'm happy to do it for the fun of it...and besides, it looks like Planet and Mr. Caro are going to take over the administrivia from me anyway. As for paying for the hosting, I wasn't thinking about that. I'd imagine it would end up being something like $20+2 with the $2 going to the site.
