Hey All,

The "Big Event " is taking place today and the horseshoe is booming as usual.
The casino and poker rooms are filled with locals, tourists, and not to mention a cloud of smoke!
I was there last night and people were running around, looking for "backers" to put them in the $10,000 Event. Players were entering satellites to try and win a seat, as the reality of it finally coming was soon to be- This was their last shot; and everyone has a shot to win "The Big One"!
I, however, am not that interested in tournaments, not even this one, but for someone who is willing to take a chance or to win a seat here, Wow, the pay-out is enormous!

A buddy of mine played in the tournament last night, the Ace-5, triple draw low ball event. Not too many entries for that one! There were only around 80 entries and he was fortunate enough to make it to the final table, however, so was Men "The Master"(a really big tournament player and winner I may add)! But my buddy did place third and Men finished first.

When I first arrived in Vegas, which was late Wednesday night, I was too darn tired to even think about venturing downtown to Binion's.
I showed up there Thursday night looking for some great side action, and although every table was full, most of the "live' games they were spreading were pot and no limit; Omaha and Hold-em. I thought, hmmm, do I want to gamble with the rest of them and take a shot at pot-limit Omaha? And then I thought,Nah, I came here to make money, not lose money! (you see, my experience in pot-limit is next to nill and I wasn't about to give someone else a big edge over me)!

Luckily, I found a stud 8 or better game that had my name written all over it. The limit was $50-100, and I've been playing nothing but this particular game since I arrived here. Playing my usual style, and trying not to stay too long if I don't have to. It has been paying off so far so no complaints here. And although I am a smoker, this stud 8 or better game is the only non-smoking table in the whole poker area, I couldn't believe it, but was thankful later for I didn't smoke as much as I normally would have. (You could cut the smoke with a knife in this place)!

Pretty soon I'll be heading back to my usual stopping ground, Bellagio, and will be looking forward to playing some Omaha and hold-em. What a difference in environments, The Bellagio and The Horseshoe...I can only hope that someday the Bellagio will buy the rights to the W.S.O.P.

The Bellagio is holding a tournament of their own, right around June 22, and I'm sure that will attract a lot more tourists and gamblers as well. (Celine Dion's husband was found playing in one of the highest limit stud games at the "B" this past week, and was said to have dropped a bundle, an absolute fortune...but he can afford it)!!
It's just amazing the impact that poker is having on people, from all walks of life, from celebraties to very successful business men/women. Bill Gates was playing at the Bellagio two years ago and what baffled me is that he was playing in the $4-8 hold-em game!!...Go figure.

Oh well, time to go head on downtown and ckeck out the W.S.O.P

It's an old money versus new money topic that hasn't even surfaced yet, but when it does...........look out!!!

Old Money: "it's the way it's always been." versus New Money: "times must and always do change."

Old Money: "leave it alone." versus New Money: "I shouldn't have to play in such filth!"

Blue hairs will cry to the throne of Benny Binion. The yuppies will cry foul over downtown accommodations.

ESPN and the Travel Channel will demand that Binion's upgrades it's facilities, or else. Binion's will kick them right to the curb.
The players will demand that Bellagio take down the walls and make their poker room larger. No problem, they say.

The Bellagio will fail to realize that the casual poker player that dreams of making it to the final table will never afford the $25,000 per seat buy-in, and on-line sites everywhere will rejoice at the action they'll get for their satellite seats.

Binion's will rely on low overhead to continue to sway players. It works.

Bellagio will work out a deal to buy the name from the last living descendant of Benny Binion, and Doyle Brunson will officially retire in protest.

Heh, very nice post!

I do however think that the $10,000 buy-in is getting a little cheap. There are several $10,000+ buy-in tourneys now, and the BIG ONE should truly be the BIG ONE. Come on, $10,000 bought a lot more in 1975 than it does today. True world champions can afford more. Wannabe punks and satellite one-in-a-millions shouldn't be encouraged to participate with cheap entries.

Just my .02.

I'm torn because I value antiquities....but stress progress.

You don't have to up the ante to make something more prestigious, though society does seem to equate dollar value with supremacy.

Old money argument:
Are you willing to sacrifice growth by raising the buy-in? A lightning-in-a-bottle winner is more likely to win at $25K buy-in, than $10K buy-in, because there will be less entrants to knock him out. The big guns will play at any buy-in, you'll just have less CEO's and golf pros taking their shot.

New money argument:
Times progess, let's not remain static. If someone else can produce a better product, let them have their shot at it. If the players don't like it, it will show through failure. The worst thing that could happen is nothing.

I went to the WSOP this year and it "looks" to me that Binions has replaced the ceiling, repainted a bit, and certainly upgraded the final table area, with two cameras on the final table (One showing the whole table, the other focused on the board cards) showing up on two large plasma screens abover the viewing area.

Ok, downstairs desparately needs cleaning and an upgrade, but Binions is Binions I suppose. Unless I am mistaken, I think the WPO has made a deal with the casino next door to handle the crowds. Maybe the best strategy for Binions to handle the growth of the WSOP is to get some local (casino next door) cooperation. With 800+ players in "The Big One", the future of the WSOP is bright, bright, bright.

The organization of the tournaments was superbe.

Glad to hear you're having a great time in Sin City. I'm here in the Salt City... not quite the same =(

I thought I read somewhere that they banned smoking from the WSOP. Is that true?

Yes, they did eliminate smoking from the "tournament area", however there are two poker rooms; the one upstairs where the tournament and the higher limit games are played and there is also a room downstairs where most of the side action is played and that is the room where they still allow smoking.
And although I am a smoker, I would rather play in a room that was a smoke-free environment as well. It saves me from smoking too much and it's just plain healthier for everyone.

I'm going to be heading down to Binion's tonight to see if there is a good game for me to play in and than I'm heading to the Bellagio.

A friend of mine busted out when Andy Glazer got all in with her and beat her by hitting his two outer for trip kings. The way she describes the satelites, you could make a lot of money playing nothing else.

That's absolutely correct.

There's a lot of money to be made from just playing satellites and there are players who do exactly that...play nothing but satellites.
