Online newbie - getting depressed, LittleHewy, 19. May 2003 07:30

Hey there, I've been playing home games in my area for a few years now, and consistently making a healthy profit, but recently I've overcome my suspicion of online poker and bought in for the minimum. I have played some micro limit, and I find it really difficult. For one thing, I base a lot of my live play on reading and distraction, but I feel really crap after losing 50c, as my expectation was that I'd at least be a break even player at this level. Maybe my ego is way too inflated, and I have briefly (but not too seriously) considered hitting a higher limit (maybe 1/2 - wowsers!), but could anyone suggest how I can make up the obvious difference in competence between my live play and online play? It's not just the micro limit, is it?

It is rather hard to answer your question with a better understanding of what your live play is like.

The best advice I can give you is to play tighter. Home games are notoriously loosey-goosey so often times top pair will take down a big pot. THIS WILL RARELY HAPPEN IN ONLINE PLAY, especially at the micro and low limits (up to and including 2-4). A few reasons for this:

1. Most home games have nowehre near 10 players to begin a hand, so with 4 or 5, the chances of a crappy two pair hitting are less likely.

2. Micro limit games are generally loose passive, so many people will have the odds to chase freak straights. Most online players will do this whether they know odds or not (especially at Micro limits) and are correct in doing so.

So, you need to do a couple of things. First, play tighter and recognize what hands play well in a very loose passive game (suited connectors). If you have AQo in late position and 7 people have limped, consider folding. Unless you flop a straight with this hand, your chances of winning are low. Second, be mentally prepared to have youe AA and KK hands get snapped off more than usual. You will still win $$ with them over the long haul, but you could have sessions where they are beaten multiple times. Third, checkraise from EP when the opportunity presents itself. If opponents are going to chase, make them make the mathematical mistake of chasing without odds. You may even get some to lay down their hands.

Loose passive games can be extremely profitable if handled the correct way. Keep at it and you will start having better results.

If you're as good as you say......
1. Your home game is full of really bad players, explaining your immense profit.
2. You're getting caught by the low limit curse of being drawn out on with hands that would normally be folded by others.

If you play poker, you know you always need some time to get used to a new table, or in this case, a whole new style of play.

Stick with the low limits for a period of time, play your game correctly, and see what it comes to. If you continue to lose, maybe you should begin to investigate the differences between home games and on-line play and adjust accordingly.

I feel your pain. I've played off and on for years and think I'm a fair player. I do still have tons to learn, though. I also recently took the plunge into betting real money online and have run smack into the same problems your having. I'm playing the micro limits and am having wild swings with my stack.

It could be that you're having a lot of trouble adjusting to the microlimits online. I am too. The problem is that you are probably seeing a lot of players that will see the flop with anything and catching miracles against you. When you have one maniac at your table (especially to your right.), it's usually a good thing. Five maniacs is a different story, they odds of one of them picking up a great hand is increased significantly.
Classic Example: I have Ace-5 in the big blind and check in for the flop. The flop comes up 2-3-4 rainbow. I have the wheel. Yipee!! The turn is another 4, but that doesn't worry me much. If someone came in A-4, then they just have trips. The river is garbage and I've been betting hard into this guy who turns over 2-4 of diamonds for the full house. No reasonable player would come in with that, but he did and beat me. At micro-limit that will happen all day long.

I have learned important lessons though. Definitely tighten up your game. Don't bluff often because people will call to the very end at these limits and don't scare easy. Look at the table for a few hands before sitting in. Try to get a feel for how many people come in for every flop. Don't be stubborn yourself. Let go of hands that are middling if a lot of people are calling against you.

Hopefully that helps. Hopefully I learn too.

I think Guru hits it right on the head in his post: At such tiny limits, many people are willing to chase freak draws with crap in their hands all day long. When there's multiple people doing it (which always happens at these limits) one of them always seems to catch exaclty what they need. If they were risking a real amount of money, they would have folded long ago; but to risk another few cents seems worth it to them, because it's just a few cents.

I find that I come up against this in limits as high as $1/$2... it peters off more as you go into 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 and up...

I can tell you something I learned that affects my game a lot is confidence. When I play in my home game I know I'm the best player and I play like it. Lately I've gone to a couple charity games and I know I can play with them but I busted out once and since then have lost the last two time. I know it is because I lost confidence. So, I'm currently taking a couple weeks off from that game until I can go in with a fresh attitude. You might want to do the same.

Cheers folks, it's good to have such a good resource as this to lay my troubles out in :)

As somebody speculated, the standard is pretty bad at the local home games, so bad, in fact, that I've only cashed in at a loss once in the last 6 months - possibly longer, as I've just begun to keep records of home games. This has obviously given me confidence without the overall knowledge and skill to back it up. Comments about tightening up are valid too, but I find that I quickly get identified as a tight ass, and thus receive little or no action.
In respect to my live game, I tend to think (my self critique may be inaccurate) that I vary my agression and tightness pretty well, and I'm not afraid of throwing my weight around when the going's good. I have a basic ability to read opponents, as to whether it's fold or raise time, a basic knowledge of pot odds, and a handle many of the various players in the area. Online, I seem to be obvious with my plays, feeling blind as far as reading goes, and intimidated by the crazy bitches that play microlimits.
Anyway, thanks for all the great responses :)
