Ok another one--did I screw up?, noiseboy, 15. May 2003 15:07

Ok so it's at about three tables in the tournament (limit hold'em) and I am a medium stack at this point. A loose player limps in and I raise with pocket AA's, we get one cold caller and the loose player calls the raise. The flop comes 777 giving me a boat, it's checked to me, so I check too, not wanting to fold everyone, then the late position player checks too. On the turn comes a four, it's checked to me by the loose player and I bet, and the late position player calls along with the loose player (the loose player makes a comment like "I know you don't have a four" so I think he has me on a stone cold bluff). The late position player is pretty good, so I have him on a pocket pair, since I have AA's I'm pretty sure I have him beat. He's a little too good to be cold calling with something like 87s or A7s. The loose player could easily have a 7, as he had been playing some weird hands, however, it's faily unlikely that either of them has a seven with three on the board. The river is another 7, it's checked to me, I bet the late position player calls and the loose player comes in for the check raise. I just call on the off chance that he has a seven since he'll play wacky hands, the late position player folds. We show down and he had A6o, yes, alas, he caught the only card in the deck that would have split for him.

Anyway, should I have played this faster? Was I suffering from a temporary case of Fancy Play Syndrome trying to trap everyone?

Thanks!

I don't think you messed it up, you had a strong hand and good reads on your opponents. You need them in to build the pot.

I agree... if the fourth 7 doesn't flop, you've got the nut hand. You can't be expecting that card to be flopped. You were simply unlucky that hand.

In my post I said I was worried about the off chance my opponent had a seven, as he does play weird hands, but I inserted that into the analysis for the river instead of the turn. Not really something to worry about when all four sevens are on the board! I guess I just called on the end because I knew it would be a split when he led at it. However, since he played all crazy, this is a mistake. I should raise and reraise, because there is always a very slight chance that he misread the board or if he's an idiot, he might even think a K Kicker is good. Or there is an extremely small chance he has me on a stone cold bluff. So I have to raise here on the end with the nut, even though I'm 99% sure he's got it too.

I think I would play this fast. No one is going to give you credit for having a 7 anyway, so I would just continue from the pre-flop raise. You might get called by a smaller pocket pair, which would be just fine. You do want other A-x out of the hand. If there's a guy in there w/ a 7, then you'll just have to pay him off, but that's not going to happen too much. Sounds like A6o is calling you to the river anyway, might as well let him pay you off the 42 other times that the last 7 doesn't fall.
