My fiance asked me an interesting question that I couldn't answer mainly because I never thought about it. Here's here question:

In Texas HE, why is the last card called the river card?

Any ideas would be helpful...

Poker was born on the Mississippi.........and the final card made you or busted you, so it effectively sent people up/down the river if they lost.

OK, so this is complete crap, but most people will buy it if they're just looking for an answer.

I like it.

I always like to think of the river as being where the fish end up. You want to find a place in the hand at a loose passive table where there is one person and a handfull of fish, that place is always the river.

It might be complete crap, but is probably closer to being the truth!

Certainly as reasonable an explanation as you are likely to find.

The variation of 7 stud they first played on the Miss was actually called "up and down the river". The last card in that game became known as the River. The rest is history
