Omaha or O/8, Pkrrookie, 13. May 2003 20:09

I'm going to be buying some books in the next couple of days. I play hold'em almost exclusively and am fairly well read on that game. I want to learn Omaha and O/8. What are the best books on these games? I hear High-Low split pkr for advanced players by ray zee kind of short changes O/8. Bob Ciaffone's Omaha book seems kind of short. I don't know much about TJ Cloutier's championship omaha (other than what Rolf Slotboom has written on his page). Is that a decent read? I want to go beyond the basics. Any advice from you all will be appreciated. thanks

I think if you are interested in learning Omaha than you should start with the basics. Once you have the basics down, then you should read some of the other books that are for player's who have already played the game because these books go into much deeper detail and discuss strategic plays and things of that nature.(I think if I were to pick up a book on a game that I had little or no experience with, I would want to know and understand what the basics were first, so then I would be able to "grasp" the more advanced books...but that's just me).

"Omaha High-Low" by Shane Smith is a book that is written for the beginner in mind and can be very helpful to you when you are trying to learn all of the basics. (there's nothing wrong with starting from the beginning).

"Omaha High-Low, Play To Win With The Odds", by Bill Boston is another book that you may find to be interesting and informative.

IMO, Ray Zee's book," Seven card stud/Omaha High-Low(for advanced plers)" is an informative, well written book, but when I first started to gain an interest in the game, I read the beginners book first. I don't think that I would have truly grasped everything that he was
saying if I had read this material first...and even after playing the game for many years, I still pick up Ray Zee's book from time to time as it has proved itself to be quite helpful.(I always like to be re-informed as I think this keeps me sharp and in line).

I believe that you should read as many books as you can on this game. It won't hurt.

The book on "Championship Omaha" by T.J. Cloutier covers tournament Omaha play.(and although that type of play may be different, it's still worth reading).

Cardplayer magazine also features Omaha articles from time to time that go into discussion of certain topics and/or" hand plays," and they are helpful as well.

Steve Badger offers some great advice on this game and he provides some valuable information also. You can find his material on www.pokerportal.com

Every little tid-bit of information that you can get your hands on will only make you stronger and more knowledgeable of the game.(all of those books mentioned are worth the read).

Once you become involved with the game and gain the experience that you'll need; that is when you'll have the opportunity to apply all that you have learned.

"The only approach you should take, is to make sure that you'll have heavy, heavy discipline and a lot of patience."

It is imperative to be extremely disciplined in Omaha high-low. And the main reason for that is, there will be so many hands that are dealt to you that may seem like really good hands to play but are in all honesty, very poor holdings that will give you a negative result overall. And because this game moves at a much slower pace than hold-em, your patience may wear thin at times; so you might be more inclined to playing a negative EV holding, but don't . (I know you didn't ask for any advice on this topic, but whenever I'm discussing Omaha, that is the first thing that comes into my mind...Patience and Discipline).

If you have the ability to incoporate all of these things, you'll be way above your competition.

Good luck,

Ray Zee's book was my favorite as well.
(however, you might want to say that in a "reply with quote" as opposed to making it a new subject)...that's just my oponion.

I go back and forth on that- it shows up in the correct thread as a response, and it gives an indication about what I'm saying, so I lean towards changing the subject line (obviously)

Ciaffone's book and Zee's book are required reading. You should also look at the articles written by Steve Badger that are available online...he is a very wise omaha player.

Yikes. That website (www.pokerportal.com) is ugly and unintuitive. How do you get to Steve Badger's stuff?
