Vs. Cagey guy?, Banning, 12. May 2003 22:47

This is something that I did recently against 2 opponents. It made me proud and the reason I am making this poste is to ask whether I did things correctly. What I mean by correctly is "Did I go through the correct thought processes to make a logical solution" and "was my play a smart play or did i just get lucky" Anyhow here it is:

The flop came down QJx. We play with about 5-6 people...shorthanded. I am holding a Jx in the BB. thus have a pair of jacks and a weak kicker. I check, Nick who is a very cagey opponent (I think cagey means tricky) raises and the table folds around to me. I decide to call because he is cagey and will often raise with low holdings. to my right is Travis a very loose player who also calls. He will call with alot of holdings as long as he figures he has a chance. Next is the turn, a king. I bet out because i figure that Nick has a weak holding and is trying to be tricky and plus I'm hoping to buy the pot. Travis calls, Nick raises me and then I call. My table image is that of a tight agressive player, thus when the river comes Ace, I bet out again. Here is my hope. I have decided that Nick has me beat but Travis who plays anything probably has a Jack and I'm hoping to thin out Nick by making him lay his hand down so that it is just me and travis and then I stand a chance of winning. I bet Travis calls, Nick looks at me and says out loud, "Well he knows that I have something good yet he still bet...? Banning isn't stupid...I fold" Then, Travis and i showdown and it ends up that he has Jx too. His kicker as well as my kicker don't even play and we split the pot. It turns out that Nick had a pair of queens and some medium kicker...enought to win with but a scary hand with those cards on the table. Nick sure kicked himself afterwards. Was my play intelligent or just plain risky, and it worked out this time with luck? To finalize. What would you recomend for playing against tricky opponents?
thanks.

First off, good for you for having such good reads on your opponents.

With your reads, i don't think there is anything wrong with calling the flop to see what happens. However, with only having middle pair (which is vunerable to more over cards) and a weak kicker you don't have much chance to improve and are really drawing to blanks for your opponents. This is not a good situation to be in unless you really know your opponents.

On the turn you got raised. I would really have to have a great reason to stay in there. I would assume the raiser has a king or other decent hand, as very few players will raise the turn as a complete bluff. Unless the raiser has bluffed/semi bluffed in that position before, i would fold. I would expect that if he raises the turn, he would at least call the river if a non str8 or non flush card hits. A better play would have been to 3-bet the turn, setting up a river bluff.

When the Ace falls, you bet out. If you are fairly certain that Nick will fold, it is a great bet. But i think Nicks fold is a bad play. For your bluff to work, you need Nick to make a bad play, for 1 bet on the river, with a decent size pot, when your betting doesn't represent a big hand, and HE raised the turn.

If you think that NICK had you beat but would lay down his hand, what did you think he had?

Basically, i think that your having good/great reads on your opponents warrents calling the flop, but not a raise on the turn (unless you had this play set up on the flop)

It sounds like both opponents were bad players, so your right to see more flops and turns against them, but with a QJxK board, you don't have much, and should fold unless you are very certain you can get Nick to fold. Also, that play probably won't work against Nick again.
