| Here's my scenario: When I play poker online and I am the big stack trying to put another player to all their chips, especially in tourney play, since it's so easy to see exactly how many chips they have, instead of going all-in myself, I just bet the exact number of chips they have. If I did this to you, would it piss you off more than if I just went all-in myself? Would it be to my advantage if it did, possibly putting another player on tilt even if they won? Are there other consequences to the action? I really don't do it to be an ass, it just makes more sense to me and both actions have technically the same result/ | ||

| I play mostly in live games and when I'm faced with this situation, I almost always just put in the full bet.(If the game is $20-40, and I'm heads up with another player who doesn't have the full amount to cover the last bet, I will still bet the $40 on the end, whether he has $30 left or $ 5 left, but that's just what I do).Your goal should be to make as much money as possible and if you have the best hand you should try to win every chip that you can. However, (as far as ettiquitte goes) I think it would look worse if you bet the exact amount that the short stack had in front of them. To me that says, "Hey, I'm gonna get every dime from you know matter what, and I don't care if it's your last chip)! The results are the same, you'll still make the same amount, but to me it just looks a little nicer if you just act like you weren't even aware that their chips were almost gone. (keep in mind, that when you're trying to put somebody on tilt, it's usually a good thing to do if they have money in front of them)! Why waste that tactic on someone who is already almost busto? I'd rather that player go into his pocket and take out some more money; so I would be more apt to be a little nicer to him. (Bet the full amount, and let him decide if he wants to call.) 4 POKER | ||

| It's funny, I do this all the time, and never even considered that it might piss off my opponent. For example, in a NL tourney, if I have 4000 chips, and I'm heads-up with a guy that has 1200... he's bet the minimum (let's say 300), and I want to raise to get him all in, I will often bet 900 to show him that I'm watching his stack and want him all in. It's the competitor in me, I feel it shows more that I'm competing directly with him, rather than betting simply on the strength of my hand. It sends a clear message, "I have a good hand, but if you want to see it, you have to go all in." I think that's really part of poker, and helps to esablish table image... but if a lot of people were to tell me that it makes me an ass, I might reconsider doing it that way. I'm actually a pretty nice guy, and I want my table image to be that I'm tough and respectable, not that I'm an ass. | ||

| I'm kind of surprised that you would be worried about pissing me off by the way you bet instead pissing me off by winning all my money! :-) I do this all the time. In live tourneys I've seen requests for chip counts before the bet. That would piss me off, but online, if your opponent bets exactly what you have in front of you, they are "Putting you to a decision." You still get the choice of calling or not. Anyway, if that kind of play bothered me, I would look for another hobby that doesn't cost so much emotionally. As long as you don't say something smartass when you win. That's why I turn OFF the chat online. | ||

| Some think that if you go all in your representing a stronger hand than you would by just raising the amount of the other player.....However I like to put a little twist to it, for example if you chip balence is 1560 I will bet 1559 this tends to get some people rattled...often people ask why leave them with a dollar, my response is so they can tip the waitress...... | ||

| Man, that is harsh but I love it! That is also a good way to disrupt someone's thought process on you too. Anytime you can get them thinking about anything other than what you have, you have gained. | ||

| Betting somebody else's stack is perfectly acceptable and happens all the time. Any player who would tilt because of this is an idiot. | ||

| I don't think this is a matter of etiquette. However, it could POSSIBLY give away something about a player's hand. If you do it all the time when you put someone all-in, good for you. However, you will see some weak players do this: they type the precise amount of their opponent's stack when they have a good hand that they WANT called, and they push all-in when they're bluffing or on a weak hand. I think the (very basic) motivation behind this is to look scary when they're weak, and not as scary when they're strong. Keep your eye out for players like this. | ||
