$50 home game--advice needed, matt, 7. May 2003 19:09

| We have a great group that plays a low stakes game every two weeks or so. And we're setting up our first no limit hold'em tournament: $50 buy in, no re-buys. What blind structure should we use? (how much for little and big blinds--if/when they should be raised, and how much.) What payout should we use (assuming we'll have 7-10 players). Is it okay to pass the deal, or should we try and find one guy who's willing to deal and not play? Anything else to help us have a fun first tournament will be appreciated! Thank you! | ||

| Hey Matt, Let's say that you'll be getting 10 players for your home game. I would make the blinds 50c{small blind } and $1{big blind} to start the game. (Depending on how often you feel the blinds should increase will depend on how long you would like this game to last). You could raise the blinds after every half hour by 50 cent increases to the small blind and one dollar increases to the big blind. (That would keep the blinds at a "Doubled" structure).ie, 50c -$1, {next level} $1and $2 blinds,{next level} $1.50 and $3 blinds and so on) I would "Pay Out" the first 4 Spots. With 10 players your prize pool would be $500. I would award One Half of the pool to 1st place. {$250} I would give 2nd place {$125} I would give 3rd place {$75} And I would make the 4th place "Payout" the same as the Buy-In {$50} If you are able to find someone who is willing to be the dealer than that would enable you to have the game run more smoothly. (however there's nothing wrong with "Passing the Deal" either; I would have 2 decks available so each hand would be ready to be dealt out before the previous hand was over). Good Luck and Have Fun! 4 POKER | ||

I suggest that you use something like the Tex's TEARs single table satellite structure. (You can find the specifics on the Pokerpages web site.) Through trial and error you can adjust the length of the rounds to make the tournament fit your time requirements. As far as dealing, I would pass the deal until the first person busts out, then that person should pick up the deal until the second bustout, then that person picks up the dealing until the third bust out and so on. The other thing to consider beforehand is the payout structure. How many places are you going to play? What are you going to play those places? Whatever you decide, decide *before* the tournament starts and let everyone know; announce it before the first hand is dealt, write it down. Home tournaments are great, in the Friday game I play in we always start with a $30 buy-in, $30 rebuy NLHE tournament before the regular game starts. Having it serves to help get players to the game on time because if you play in the tourney you are guaranteed a seat in the regular game. Paul Stine College Station, TX

| My suggestion for basics which can be tweaked, depending on the number of players, is to start with T300 and blinds of 1-2, raising every 20 minutes according to: 1-2 2-4 3-6 colour up 5-10 10-20 15-30 colour up 25-50 50-100 75-150 If you think that the transition between the higher amounts is too much, you can leave out the second colour up and play 20-40, 30-60, 40-80, 75-150 ... all depends on what people are comfortable with, how much time you want it to take, and such. | ||

| I agree with this structure (we've used a similar one successfully in a good 10-15 home tournaments), but also have a few added comments on prizepool: 9-10 players: Pay 3 at 50/30/20 or 60/30/10 (I prefer the former as 3rd plays merely gets his/her buy-in back in the latter case. However, some players will prefer a higher payout to 1st place.) 6-8 players: Pay 2 at 70/30 or 60/40 <= 5 players: Just pay 1st. | ||

| I would start off w/ the blinds at 5/10 and increase every 15 or 20 minutes. If this is a friendly house game, then just deal yourselves, so no button is needed (or a dealer). Oh, depending how friendly you guys are I would make the payouts 70/20/10 or if it's more cut-throat or you only want 1 winner then do 80/20 or higher. Have fun. | ||
