has online poker diminished your live B&M game, jdsalinger, 7. May 2003 16:31

hmm I've been to a B&M casino only about 2-3 times in the last 3 months mostly just playing online. Well I played a big NL game only because there was the biggest fish I had ever seen playing there and my friend backed me half. Then today he dragged me back and played the 20/40 game but my heart was beating so fast for some unknown reasons. Stole some blinds with cards I usually wouldn't blink about stealing with but I was hesitant probably only some milliseconds but everything felt off. Lucky the guys played with me before and respected some of those raises. Played crappy but still left on the plus side then went to 4/8 to work out some kinks and was still feeling not so great adjusting to the live game. Won a couple of hundred mostly because I flopped 2 pair about 3 or 4 times. Then played the NL tourney not so well but was dealt AA an amazing 4 times. You should win it with the cards I was dealt but I got 2nd by virtue of the poker gods. But I must say playing so much online and not worrying about tells and reading people really has diminished my game. But lucky for me the cards were running real good.

My experience has been the opposite of yours (sorry). Playing online has sharpened my B&M game due to the speed at which you need to make decisions on-line versus casino play. Also, believe it or not it has made it EASIER for me to read people at the casino because on-line the only way to read an opponents hand is to work the hand backwards. In the casino, you can do that AND you get to see em' sweat.

It sounds like maybe the 20-40 game was a little above your head in terms of stakes (I could be wrong here, but I am judging the "tone" of your post). Maybe that was the problem. I find when I play a little above my comfort level, I also get the racing heart, nervous play feeling.

Anyway, stick with it and maybe focus on all the things that you can see at the casino that you can't online. In my view, the casino game has become easier because of all the information swirling around that you don't see online.

Good luck.

Steve

I think that playing online is really good for one thing. You get used to folding hands that you should fold because you aren't bored playing online...you can be doing other things while you're waiting for your next hand. When you're trained to fold bad starting hands you're not going to all of a sudden start playing garbage at the casino.
