Short handed games, Cade, 7. May 2003 15:47

I've got my weekly home game happening this friday as normal, but it looks like the game is gonna be kind of short handed (5-6 players). I know in short handed games you can play a little looser, but does anyone have any other advice on short handed games?
thanks

Shorthanded games are played with a lot more aggression pre-flop than any other game.
You need to be more aggressive with your starting hands.
Hands that you would normally call a raise with in a full game but may not necessarily raise it yourself, are hands that you should be raising with in a shorthanded game(as long as you are first to act and there were no limpers ahead of you).
If you are holding a hand like K-10, A-10, or even A-9,if noone has entered the pot yet, you should be more inclined to raise with these holdings as opposed to just limping in.(If someone else is holding on to 10-9 suited, than MAKE him/her put in an extra bet to draw to that hand.)
That is why High Cards go way up in Value and the Smaller, and/or Suited Connectors will go down in Value. (10-9 suited, 5-6 suited need volume and if the game is 5 handed than these and Similar Startings will not show you a decent profit). You have to be able to limp in with them cheaply while still making sure you are getting enough volume to go with it.(Good Position with these starting hands).
Stick to the high card drawing hands so you can allow yourself to have More Outs with the hand, like flopping a strong pair.
(K-Q, K-J, K-10 are good drawing hands and the lesser ones can be playable, too as long as you can get in cheaply.(Q-J, Q-10, J-10, And J-9 suited)

Ace High Holdings can be very strong raising hands.
(The blinds come around very quickly in a short game so you have to adjust your style and be more apt to raise with Ace High.)Short-handed play is much different than a full ring game.

Your Pairs become more Playable now and should be Raised a lot more of the time, pre-flop. (just don't get "Carried Away" with the smaller ones if your faced with too much aggression pre-flop).

Play looser. Play agressively. Give more value to big starting hands. Give less value to drawing hands. You're almost never going to get pot odds to justify playing something like 4h5h or 7h9h preflop.
