I read a a good deal about calculating pot odds and I think I have a good grasp on the concept, but there is one thing I'm unclear on. When looking at pot odds, do you only consider the bet in front of you that moment or do you look at all the chips you put in that pot.

Example: We're on the river and the pot is $200. I'm looking at $20 to stay in the hand, so I'm looking at pot odds of 10 to 1. However, fifty of those dollars already in the pot are mine. Do I ignore that fact when deciding whether to make the river bet?

You don't subtract out your contributions on previous streets.

None of the money in the pot is yours. You've put it in there and it is lost already. If you stay in the hand and win you get this money and if you fold you do not get this money. Thus money that is already in the pot is up for grabs.

Doesn't security give you a problem when you do this?

Thanks. I didn't really look at it from that perspective, but it makes total sense. I have another stupid question. What does UTG stand for? I haven't figured it out yet.

As shorn points out, UTG is "Under the Gun" which means the first player to act in a given situation. Preflop, UTG refers to the first player after the BB.

Pot odds are the amount you will win IF you make the winning hand.(Include the chance you may make your hand and still lose). It includes all money in the pot plus any amount of money you THINK you can get into the pot IF you make your hand. that is your TRUE price!

, as opposed to pot odds (the pot you have in place right now, plus any bets you could reasonably expect to get calls from on this round only)
