| Just want to share a recent experience. A bit frustrating, but educational (in the Zen of Poker sense). I have been playing mostly at PokerRoom for the past few months and have consistently beat the $1-2 games, finding many loose maniacs that can be beat big. I have been averaging 4-5 BB per hour. Last night, I was hitting one game pretty good (same 2 guys that kept paying me) and then the game ended. Everyone left the room. I found another table that looked beatable, and was it ever!! Only problem was that I couldn't get any damn cards. They just ran cold. The infrequent big pairs or Big Slick didn't hold up and every drawing hand missed the flop with no expectation. Just ice cold. I had one great drawing hand and a huge pot with a 10d-10s-7d flop. I held Kd-Qd. Big fish in the BB just kept betting it out. normally I would put a decent player on a full house and tossed the 4-flush, but I kept calling his raises (as did 3 other big fish!!). I hit the flush and called him on the river (as did 2 other big fish!!). Just awful. Problem was that the room was so hot with fish that I got a bit overaggressive. Didn't respect the other players so called their hands on the river far more often than I normally would (most didn't end up showing a profit). The point is that I got away from my usual game because: a) I didn't respect the other players who were calling and raising with seemingly random hands; b) there was a lot of money getting thrown around and I felt entitled to it. How do you throw away a flush against a guy that could easily be raising like a maniac with 3T and an A kicker (or worse)? So...I ended up (after 3 hours in the new room) losing about .5 BB per hour. Not brutal mind you, but I didn't play my game. Playing my game would have entailed essentially mucking almost every hand either pre-flop or on the flop (which I should have done, and turned off my computer after 1.5 hours, found a different game). Not exactly tilting here - but this type of game threw me off my usual game. I tend to play far better online in a game with one or two big fish, a few loose passive types and 4 or 5 good solid players. The solid players keep me on my toes and the fish add nicely to our totals. But these maniac games can be brutal. Btw, my -.5 BB was my total for the night. I was winning 5 or 6 BB per hour before changing rooms. Anyone have similar experiences? | ||

| IMHO, I think you were on tilt. You explained your reasons for playing these hands and than you followed it up with saying that if you were playing "your game", almost every hand you held pre-flop and on the flop would have been thrown away. You may not have realized it at the time, and you were justifying your calls because they were all fish; but when you continue to play bad hand after bad hand, and have total disregard for the fact that sometimes fish get good cards too, than you were not on your game at all, and for some reason you didn't seem to be focused. That is all a form of tilting and I think you realize it now after reading what you had to say about it. To answer your last question, are you talking about getting unlucky, or are you asking if anyone else goes on tilt, too? My answer as well as everyone else's (if we're all being honest here), is Yes. But it's imperative that we don't continue playing under these circumstances and you should try to correct playing that way in the future. Play your A game every time. 4 POKER | ||

| You are right 4 Poker. I was on a tilt for exactly the reason you said. I wasn't on an ANGRY tilt, but a tilt nonetheless. And I did play badly in that second session. But I meant tilting. we all get unlucky. The better players just have more patience than I have sometimes. Btw, it was very late at night and I was definitely not as focused as usual. I was more focused on trying to take money from bad players than playing good poker. You are a wise man. | ||

| I'm beginning to realize (in my short poker life) that this game is as much about the bets you don't make as opposed to the bets you do. I know I've improved a lot just by managing my damage control (damage control being the amount of self-inflicted, stupid-ass damage I bring on myself). I hear a lot of people talking about changing their game to suite the game they are currently in. I'll agree to a certain extent but it seems to me that winning poker revolves around the same old principles no matter what limit game you are in. You have to wait for your opportunities Fold when the flop is worthless Know when your hand is second best Punish your opponents when you have them beat. You are realizing that you simply got caught up in the action. The good news is that it wasn't expensive and you realize your mistake (good players always do). I have a funny feeling that the next time you run into this table, your opponents won't be so fortunate. | ||
