How would you play this?, Big_Slick, 1. May 2003 17:34

I encountered this today in a NLHE online game (play money). This was a tournament and was in the later stages with better players.

I was dealt a pair of 10's in last position. The first player bet, the other called and I raised. They each called.

The flop came 10, Q, K.

The first player bet and the other called. In last position, I proceeded to put in a large raise wanting to drive the other 2 out of the pot. I was concerned that they would draw a straight to beat my 3-of-a-kind. These were better players who probably had very good hole cards.

Well, it worked and I took the pot down.

I can't remember any specifics except that I raised the pot to $60,000. At this point in the game, this was the equivalent of about 12 BB's.

Did I play this right? Should I have tried to trap them or was I wise to take them down when I did? Also, how would you play this in a low limit game given the same circumstances?

Normally, I wouldn't have been this aggressive. All I kept envisioning was losing 40 big bets on the river.

Thanks in advance,
lee

I would have played it stronger in limit vs. NL. Reasons being, if you're playing limit you can bet or you can raise with what might be the best hand. And when the turn card comes, you can get a much better feel if your set is still the nuts. With a board of 10,Q,K, somebody may have already flopped the straight but it won't hurt you that much if they had; not money wise anyway. You still would have a redraw to the full house, or you can throw it away without it costing you too much money.

However, in a NL tournament many players limp in with AJ, and even with QQ. They don't want to committ too many chips with pocket QQ's as there can easily be overcards to that hand once the flop is revealed.
If I were holding QQ, I may also limp just to see what happens. Once you committ to putting too many of your chips pre-flop, that is where you can really cripple your chip stack leaving you very vulnerable.
I would not have raised pocket 10-10's after two players had already limped in, and I definitely wouldn't committ too many of them after I saw this flop either. You did flop a set, but keep in mind the board was very co-ordinated and somebody could have easily flopped a straight or a higher set, (the latter of the two would leave you almost drawing dead). NL players like to limp in with big pairs as to try and trap someone into making a mistake. If the player in front of you did hold a bigger pocket pair and raised with it coming in, you would probably have a much better idea as to where you stood on the flop. And even though you took down the pot, remember, they do limp in with big pairs so you are unable to put them on a particular holding, and they also do this to protect their own chip position. Never risk too many of your chips pre-flop with 10-10 and try not to risk too many chips on the flop as well. The hands in NL are sometimes revealed more once the turn card is present, and that's because a hand can easily be changed from having the nuts to having a loser.

I think the raise preflop was a good play. Not many people limp in with high pairs in late stages of tournaments and even if they did limp they might reraise to get a feel for where they are.

You could very easily be beat on the flop. One of those EP limpers could have something like AJ, JQ, JK, which could easily outdraw you. depending on the size of the original bettors bet i would probably raise a small amount and see what happened, then i would just try to show the hand down. If you raise that much and get called you are probably already beaten. My advice would just to play it slow and try to show it down for as little as possible.
