When will it end?, pillsnbooze, 30. Apr 2003 18:47 | ||

| How long does a losing streak last? How long can I keep getting shitty cards, a shitty flop, or a combination of the two? I am getting dealt crap cards, (unless getting J6o four consecutive hands isn't crap). When I get some high cards there is always an overcard on the flop. I can't catch a set when I have a pocket pair. But the 1 time I caught AA in the last week, I did win! I've been doing this online for a little more than a month. I generally stay tight and win the hands that I should. Right now, I just don't have the hands to win. I play low limit holdem, so it is impossible to use my tight image to bluff anybody. The one thing I see in myself is that I am disciplined enough to not start playing crap and digging a deeper hole. I just want to play for a couple of hours and not end up screaming F-Bombs at the imaginary dealer on the computer. Thanks for letting me rant, -Jared | ||

| Just maintain your discipline and it will pass. I haven't faced one of those prolonged losing streaks in a while but I feel your pain. I have never had a year in 8 years of playing where I had nore than two losing months with the exception of 2001 where I had a 3 straight losing month extravaganza that made me want ot slit my wrist. The worst part wasn't getting bad cards it was flopping bunches of sets and losing with them, getting beat with full houses by 4 of a kind, flopping a straight flush and getting beat by a higher straight flush. Nearly every imaginable asswhipping you can take I took. Anyone that has played for a serious amount of time has also dealt with similar situations, it happens. Just do your best to keep playing solid cards in good position and it will pass. Don't spiral past the threshold of misery and dig yourself a bigger hole unnecessarily. Best wishes for a turnaround. | ||

| Hang in there Jared. I have been having a shocking time of it lately too. I played for four and a half hours last Saturday night and won exactly 3 pots. The first, I got a free play from the big blind and my J8s made a flush on the turn after the flop was checked around. The second, I played JQo from late middle missed the flop and turn completely (both checked around) and caught a Q on the river. The last hand that I won, I raised AQo from the cutoff, missed the flop but took it down when I bet the flop after it was checked to me. That was it. For the rest of the night I mostly folded crap such as J4s, A6o, K7o (and worse). In all the hands that I played (including the 3 that I won) I didn't hit a single flop. It was misery. Unfortunately not all that uncommon either. During the really cold sessions I try to find other things to enjoy. I play in live games; the chat at the table is often fun. I also take the opportunity to observe other players. There was a player opposite me who was clearly not bad but, nevertheless, was taking a bit of an ass kicking that night. It was interesting watching him slide on and off tilt. He would seem to loose all reason for 3-4 hands at a time, then get himself back under control for a while, until the tilt set in again. That made me wonder about how I deal with bad beats. Even if I think that I am controlling my tilt perhaps it would be better to just quit for the night as soon as it sets in? One thing to take comfort in is that at least stone cold cards are a relatively cheap way to loose at poker. Much better than a bad beat fest. I hope that you start seeing some friendly cards soon. I am sure that you will. In the meantime try not to worry so much about them running cold. They do that quite often. Snorbolus | ||

| 1: Bad cards don't cost you money - good cards that don't get there cost you money. I'd rather fold a J6o preflop than play my AA and get rivered out of a giant pot by somebody fishing around with bottom pair and hitting his kicker. 2: It might take a while. If you run bad for 100 hours then start to worry about your play. Usually a bad bad swing goes for 25-50 hours. 100 is getting suspicious. 3: Take a vacation from poker - I'm on one right now and it is really nice to not look at cards for a while. I have time to spend with the lovely Wren and I have time to read Slim's new book. This weekend I'll be getting drunk out of my mind - something I can never do when I have to play. 4: Buck up. Get back on the horse and keep playing. The best thing to do when you've been running cold is to play tight...if you're tight you won't be too swingy so you'll be likely to book either a small win or a small loss - bring your ego back to life slowly and after you have booked a couple of small wins get back to your normal style of play. | ||
