Hello Folks,

Does anyone have any information regarding people that are interested in providing "financial backing" to tournament poker players? I read a post not too long ago relating to this subject, but the thread never really developed.

Thanks Bill A

My advice on this one is simple:

Don't.

You need to have so many kinds of personal trust for the person you are backing. You need to know that they are a good solid player who will not tilt your money away or make stupid plays.

You need to trust him on a moral and personal level so that he doesn't "sneak off to the bathroom with a handful of black chips ratholed in his sock," as Roy could tell you.

You need to trust that when he wins he doesn't conveniently remember to pay back your "loan" and not split his winnings.

Trust Trust Trust.

Who can you trust this much in poker who has so much value as a player, but doesn't have his own bankroll. Some railbird? I hope not.

Now if you've somehow animated the corpse of Stu Ungar and want to enter him in the WSOP I could see a case for this. If you're ultra rich and want to bankroll a truely great player to play in the $25,000 - $50,000 hold'em game at the Taj, then by all means - I'm sure Johnny Chan will have words with you. If you're looking to stake your pal who talks the talk and does really well at your $1-$2 home games, think about it again very seriously.

Aside from my cynical advice, my understanding of rolling a tourney player is that profit is split 50/50 and you absorb the losses, but after each win you get all the loss money from previous tournaments back before a split is made. And arangement like this might be for a year of tournament play.

Thanks STDIOH for the sound advice. I think poker should be an individual sport (game of skill!
