| First off, I'd just like to say how great I think this forum is. I'm a web designer by profession and would love a community like this to bounce ideas off of or just ask advice. I would like some insight on online poker. I'll eventually be playing in lower limit games (like 3/6) and would love some strategy or advice. I must admit, the whole idea of playing poker against opponents you can't see blows my mind. I've always thought of poker as a 2-front war; learning to play your cards coupled with learning to read your opponents. That being said, is there any evidence that online poker is more or less profitable than playing in person? Is a good player losing money because he can't read the guy sitting across from him? Thanks in advance. | ||

| I'd say that a good read loses a lot when he plays online, but there are other factors to make up for it. At the very low limits you can find some truely wretched players. There are about twice as many hands dealt per hour. There is no toking and the rake is much lower than in a B&M cardroom. Plus you save on gas and time spent waiting for a table. All in all, playing online is vastly superior to playing in a B&M *except* for not being able to see your opponents. But on the bright side of that one, they can't see you either, so if you're a tell factory, it is a welcome anonymity. | ||

| I like that expression: "... a Tell factory". It goes into my notebook. | ||

| I agree I stopped going to the card room and basically play online exclusively. Got my laptop and I can play while eating lunch, on the counch etc. I stopped playing the higher limit games because there is some extremely fishy things going on. Collusion isn't as likely at 3/6 but I now play exclusively NL, PL, or tourneys online and thus don't have to worry much about collusion. I used to rave about paradise and still like the large selection but stay away because the weirdest crap happens there. | ||

| I too have almost stopped going to the B&M cardrooms for many of the reasons that stdioh stated although I really do enjoy the live interaction from time to time. When I first started to play online I thought alot about losing the psychogical factors, tells, etc. that occur when you are face to face as I have always had the ability to pick up on these things extremely well and I have to admit I like scoping out the pretty cocktail waitresses when one of my counterparts call for the new setup every 30 minutes but that being said the greatly increased number of hands you receive on line with the lower ranks more than makes up for these thing (minus the waitresses of course:)). I generally play 4 tables at once in the 2/4-5/10 range and over the last two years I have made more per year than I did playing 20/40-40/80 at 1 to 1.5 BB/hour at the B&M casinos. My advice to you is play pretty damn tight but aggressive when you get the big hands. You are getting so many hands per hour it is just not worth it to come in with mediocre hands. Stay away from trouble hands out of position (A10, KQ, J10, small pairs). If you have the descipline to throw away these types of hands from early position to keep yourself out of trouble you should do fine. Get a database to help you track your play as well as the play of your opponents. Seek those fish out and learn who are the better players (you will see them there everyday playing a very solid game and it shouldn't take you too long to figure out who they are). Don't buy in for 500.00 and plop down in a 5-10 shorthanded game and expect not to go broke (play within your online bankroll so you only have ot buy in once). Avoid ProPoker.com like you would a working girl with herpes. Good luck. | ||

| Thanks for all the great advice. A few follow up questions if I could... What does B&M stand for? Also, how do play multiple games at once? Is it with the same account or do you open multiple accounts in different rooms? Thanks a bunch. | ||

| B&M stands for "brick and mortar", another term for casino card rooms. You can play in multiple games with just using one account. Depending on the site in which you use, some sites allow you to play in 2 games at one time where others allow 3 and 4. I know Party Poker allows you to play in 3 games at one time. You simply sit down in one game with a certain amount of money, then you can look for another game to play in and sit there as well. When it's your turn to act in either game, it will automatically take you to that screen. Some players change the resolution on their computer so they can have both games appear on the screen at one time, side by side so they don't have to keep switching back and forth. (go into the "control panel" to help you with changing the resolution). That's where it's found on my computer, others may be different but I go into my control panel and it's under the "Appearances and Themes" category. Good luck, 4 POKER | ||
