| Where do you get most of your poker education, ie: books, this forum( or other players), at the table. I have been playing about 6 years at a casino and have done well but I can only go occasionally because of the distance, so, I consider myself a newbie. I never studied until about 4 mos. ago and the more I learn the more I realize how lucky I have been not lose ALOT of $. For me books are good for general knowledge, the forum tells me how to apply it, and the table is the test of what I have learned and what I need to work on. I believe some people (maybe me too)put too much into strictly doing what the book said to do in a given situation. What do you all think ? My way seems very slow is there a better way? | If you've been playing for 6 years, but only picked up a book 4 months ago, then you *are* indeed a newbie. Read a lot. Practice what you read. Then read about more advanced strategies. Read read read. Practice practice practice. One thing that helped my game a lot was playing homegames with a bunch of winning players who are all math professors, PhD students, etc. I figure that I was losing about 1 BB/hour in that game, but we were playing 1-2 and having a fun time so I can budget that as education and entertainment expense. It was good for my game because I could learn to play like my opponents and be a winning player. If you hit the casinos and learn to play like your opponents you're going to be a losing player. | ||

| Ya I guess I should add that I was taught by my Dad whom has been playing about 40 years and actually played to support us when I was very young. He has never read poker but the things Sklansky teaches seem to come naturally for him. I think I'm going to have to do as you suggest . I used to think I was good because I won but I'm learning. | Fair enough. I grew up playing poker and was a winning player at the age of 9 (but I was playing with 9 year old rich kids with fat allowances) ... I think my poker childhood was not that different from Roy C's. All it took to win was to fold a lot, wait for a good hand, and bet the bejesus out of it. That simple strategy was great against dumb kids. I didn't start to advance my strategies until I embraced the mathematics of poker by getting a math degree, by reading about poker theory, by developing into a very decent backgammon player (if I do say so myself - and that is *ALL* a game of calculating win probability and weighing it against pot odds), etc, etc, etc. All that said, I spent a lot of time growing up with all four of my grandparents, all of whom played poker. They taught me a hell of a lot, but that is beside the point because if I sat down now at a poker table with myself from 5 years ago I would take all of his money in time. | ||
