3-6 Texas Holdem Casino Games, Lex, 26. Apr 2003 12:44

I know that there a many different ways to answer this question because all games are different.

However, in general, what's the best way to play in 3-6 Texas Holdem games in casinos? I'm assuming that the game is typical (i.e. a couple of good players and several average players). Please address the type of cards to play in early, middle, and late positions.

For example, Skylansky (sp?) would suggest that in late position, many hands can be played (i.e. K3s, 89s, etc.). However, in most low limit holdem games I've played, these hands rarely hold up, even from late position.

Thanks for the feedback.

In these games, straight foreward play is best. Be tight and selectively agressive. Generally in these games, its hard to drive people out with a raise if they have two semi OK cards. I would recomend playing pretty tight upfront. Even in a loose passive game, the flop occasionally comes off three handed so drawing hands such as suited connectors and small pairs should be saved for situation where you have the number of opponents you need. These types of hands can be played from middle and late position if its clear you will be getting enough action. That's the advantage of position in LLHE preflop, you can get a reasonable picture of how the betting will go and the number of opponents you're up against. Sklansky's rankings are ok, but realize that the playability of a lot of hands depends on the amount you have to pay for it and the expected payoff you will recieve when they hit. So try to learn which hands play well in different situations and dont try anything too fancy. If you do this and think about more than your own cards after the flop, you should do pretty well at 3/6.

Perehaps the most important thing to think about when deciding which starting hands to play is "what would be a good flop for this hand?"

At a loose passive table, with several callers already in, both K3s and 98s are very playable hands BUT you are not looking to flop top pair. Indeed, if you do flop just top pair with either of these hands you should seriously consider folding. K3s is looking for the flush (idealy with the ace of your suit on the board), or for two pair. 98s is looking for the straight (not the straight to the Q though) with the flush as a less desirable outcome. Here again two pair is often a winner (frequently a better holding than the flush).

In addition to knowing that you will have enough players in to give you the correct odds to draw, position is important with these type of hands (drawing hands) becaues if you do flop one of the draws that you are looking for but the table goes insane, betting, raising and re-raising before the action reaches you, then you can bail out without wasting a first bet or getting trapped for more.

Play tight and slowly make money. You want a loose passive game at these limits. Yes, K3s and 89s can both be played. I'll take 89s in late position over K3s any day of the week though. 89s is a wonderful hand and against a loose passive game can even be played in early position (the idea being that even with a raise after you there will be lots of cold callers to give you odds and you should have pot odds to draw for your monster). Basically, the looser the game is the more weight you need to put on drawing hands and the less weight that you should put on made hands.
