Defending the blinds, Don Quixote, 25. Apr 2003 09:57

I use Poker Tracker to track my stats. It is easy to check the percentage of times I defend my blinds. I just read on a competitor's site that his software showed him that he was not defending his blinds enough. I don't think there is a magic percentage number, is there, to call/fold the blinds? I consider several reasons to call/fold in the blinds, and none are percentages. Thanks for any responses, I will appreciate them.

Interesting question. I also agree it depends on the passive/aggressive nature of the table as a whole, and the type of players in the cutoff or on the button, as well as the lack of quality in your starting cards. That said, I probably call a single raise about 40% of the time from the big blind. I don't track that statistic, so this is a rough guess.

Gotta ask since I have seen the phrase thrown around but am not sure what it is....

What is the "cutoff"?

Thanks,

The cutoff is the position immediately to the right of the button. The cutoff and the button are the two positions most likely to make a steal play on the blinds.

BTW TK, do you mind giving your nick on UB? Mine is Diogenes, and I play the micro limits also.

Don Quixote,

I posted some of my thoughts on this subject previously that you might want to read. I don't know if it will help you any but looking at my stats when in the small and big blind has helped me some in how I play those positions now. Since my previous post I am still a pretty good winner in the small blind. My Big Blind position is still my only negative one but it has not climbed as fast in the negative direction as it was going. Good luck.
