how much worse are higher limits for tight players?, jdsalinger, 25. Apr 2003 00:27 | ||

| well after keeping track for 9 weeks of online poker. I've won 6800 in low limit (3/6 - 8/16) and NL/PL (.50/1 - 5/10) over a span of ~240 hours. In 70 hours of (20/40 and 30/60) I've lost 1400. The sad part is that I was actually up $3000 in the bigger limits and basically lost 4k in 3 really bad sessions (after withdrawls from paradise). Overall the generally short tables and big blinds make larger limits a less than ideal setting for tight players. I was just wondering if there were any really tight players who find it more profitable at higher limits or do 90% of them they prefer the low middle limits? | ||

| Higher limits require a bigger bankroll than at lower limits, but you know that, ... but at higher limits the swings are greater and you need to be able to mentally adjust. I ventured into higher limits and had what I thought was a bad session, but when wiser heads (more experienced poker players ...) commented they put it down to the normal swings of a higher limit game coupled with two aggressive players that played a looser game. "Moving to higher limits" is a burning hot topic with most beginners and I would appreciate some pros answering this post. In closing, the advice was to return to lower levels, build up the bankroll, learn from the session, ... then go back and hit the higher limits again. | ||

| High limit games are hard to beat - if they were easy to beat then more sharks would play in them and make them harder - nature is balance. Thus in order to beat a high limit game, being a tight player isn't enough. You need to play like Cooke or Sklansky or somebody else who writes on advanced topics. You need to be tricky, to play with agression and with subterfuge - you need to *play poker* - being a robotic tight ABC player won't cut it. Thus, good advice is, "don't play the higher limits until you are *sure* that you can beat them." Take *sure* to mean whatever you want. | ||
