When Paul Darden was being interviewed he quotes something
like this "I try to play the other person" i.e. hands and how
he would bet. Can someone elaborate on this?

tks

what Paul ment, is that he knows what his cards are, and those are straitforward to play. The important thing is know what your opponents cards are. He is "playing his man" by reading him with tells, or from texture or from the ammount he bets... to find out what his opponent has... and whether he should bet big so they would have to pay for their draw, or force them out of the pot, or trap them and jump um on the river after they are more commmited to the pot. his cards matter, but what really only matters if his cards can beat the mans cards, so he is playing the man, as apposed to JUST playing complete cards, ie premium hands. thats what texas hold'um is all about.

Basically, you usually don't put someone on an exact hand. Sometimes you will be able to, but most of the time you put them on a group of hands. For example (overpair, set, big ace, baby pair, flush draw, etc.). Some players can play fairly predictable. Others, like the magician, are hard to put on a hand and thus you will have to rely more on your cards.

Some are just better at it than others. I remember seeing Stu Ungar make an all-in call on the river with a ten high because he read his opponent for a busted draw with two cards lower than ten. Now Stuey was no doubt (at least in my mind) the best poker player the world has yet seen and certainly the best read.

Still, a lot of players wear their tells on their sleeves and nearly jump out of their seats when the look down at pocket aces.
