The greatest big blind hand ever?, SoCalPat, 24. Apr 2003 15:43

Maybe, but it's certainly atop my list.

Paradise $5 limit HE tourney. I start off in the BB holding 34o. Three callers, SB completes, I check and we're five to the flop.

FLOP: 33A, all black, two clubs

SB checks, I bet, figuring I'm ahead and wanting to make club flush draws pay the price. Two EP players fold, LP calls, SB calls.

TURN: 3d

SB bets, I raise, and as soon as I do, I think to myself, "Big mistake." Why telegraph my hand now?

Those thoughts are quickly out the window when the LP re-raises. SB calls two bets cold and I call (naaaaaa ... I couldn't possibly have the case 3, right? ;-) ). There are only two cards that can beat me on the river, an A if someone's holding AA, or 5c if someone's holding 24c. Given the betting to this point, the odds of that happening are as great as Johnny Chan asking me for tips on his game.

River is a Jc -- a perfect card if somone's holding Kxc. SB checks, I bet, LP (God bless him) raises, SB calls two cold. I three-bet. LP caps (?!?!?!?!?!?!?!), SB completes, and before I complete, I type in the chat log, "Oh for this game to be no-limit." I complete, and SB and LP each had Axo.

The lesson I got from all of this (besides the re-inforced one that some players are terminally stupid), is that you can never underestimate what the BB has, especially if h/she is in for free.

Given a slightly lowered example (you have a solid 2nd or 3rd nut hand before the river, with only the unlikliest of hands able to beat you), how would you play a BB or SB who keeps betting and raising into you?

I don't understand why you didn't cap the betting on the turn.
You bet the turn after making quads, (good bet by the way- most players will go for a check-raise but I feel your hand is more disguised when you come out betting), the LP player raises you, the small blind calls 2 bets cold? Why wouldn't you raise it one more time now. They both obviously have something and are willing to raise you and cold call; perfect time for you to maximize your profit.

Great hand though!!

I hear what you're saying. I guess by not capping the turn, I was trying to give the message that I too, had an A, and was willing to chop.

The weakest part of my game is not using the check-raise enough. When I figure I'm ahead, I want to put money in the pot. Too often at these micro-limit games, people play crap and call or check along, only to hit their 9-high flush draw on the river. I want to charge them as heavily as possible.

I'm deathly afraid of people drawing out on me, but I have to develop a confidence in my hand-reading ability to check (and possibly miss a round of bets in hopes of killing people on expensive streets when their dras miss).

This time, however, I was so far ahead, I didn't want to risk eliminating one of the other two bettors. If calling, and not capping, the turn did this and encouraged them to re-raise me on the river, bully for me. But short of asking the players personally, we'll never know.

Interesting sidebar: A family situation forced me to leave this tournament early. I had planned on begging Paradise for a refund (c'mon, it's $6 -- you can help me out, right?), but the results were emailed to me and I ended up finishing third and in the money!!!!

Go figure.

i think it was a better play to bet. i personally dont checkraise TOO much, unless its against the really fish type and i think a bet will make them fold... but they would stay commited if i checkraised. think of it this way, if you check raise, they could check behind you, and you would get no bets, or they would bet, you would raise and you would get two bets...so 0 or 2 bets. where as if you bet, you could get 1 or 3 bets in, if they call you get one, but if they raise, you raise... so on.... i lead a lot more. just a personal preference... check raising is a necessity to have, but i don't think you are loosing too much from your game if you don't do it too often.
