Help: online poker, playmoney and $.50/$1 games, lala, 24. Apr 2003 11:45

Hi, I'm VERY new to poker, and have helplessly fallen in love with the game. I'm eager to learn and think I've made progress relatively fast, always trying to think critical and have the correct approach to learning.

Due to geographical problems and beeing of young age (18) I can't visit casinos and play "real" poker. Therefore I'm trying to learn by playing hold'em online and watching the highlimit ring games and tournaments as much as possible and read a lot of articles (saving money to by the basic books/bibles). Here's my question:

Is there really anything to learn playing with play money online, besides counting pot-odds and probabilities? I'm a novice, but watching the way my opponents play is sometimes really ridiculous! Obvisously, they don't consider the play money as 'real money' in terms of betting and raising. They chase to the river with scrutty cards, well you shurely know the deal. How would you do in if you were in my shoes? Watch games, play modestly in play money games and then try to stand on my feet at $.50/$1? In the long-run it's of course the only option, but do you think I should play in play-money games as much as I can before I step in to the world of real money poker?

Yours Sincerely,
a humble apprentice

I suppose that really depends on your financial situation. If you can afford to blow 50 or 100 bucks learning the game in a real situation, then I would say buy in for real money. There are a few places that offer limits as low as 0.01/0.02. You could play forever on 20 bucks here. Obviously, these limits will be very loose, but at least there is some resemblence of real money.

If you're reading a lot and follow the play correctly, you shouldn't do too bad at a low limit table. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip,
I guess that the $.01/$.02 games are just as loose as play games, thing is you always have to live with the psychos who play irrationally but when everybody calls the re-re-re-raise pre-flop... I mean there's only four aces in a deck. You can't learn to think properly and you can't interpret the signs if you know what I mean.

Another question: What's your opinion? How loose is the $.50/$1 games compared to play money and next level?

I've seen 0.50/1.00 games where everyone sees the flop no matter what, and calls the whole way if they have any piece of it, and I've seen 0.50/1.00 games where a single preflop raise was likely to steal the blinds! I'd say there are a lot of players like you -- the ones trying to get a feel for the game and not willing to risk tons of money to do it. Some of them are decent players, and some of them aren't. It really depends on the table. Another piece of advice I'd give is that you're better off playing at a table with half fish and half reasonable players than with 9 fish. With everyone constantly trying to draw out on you, it'll happen a lot more often, and your variance goes way up.

From my own experience at Paradise Poker: $0.5/$1 - 42%, $1/$2 - 38%, $2/$4 - 35%. This is players per flop percent, average value for games I were in at specific limit. Each level average represents 100-200 hours of playing. Note that this is actual value of those games I were in, games which I choose to play. In general it means mostly loose games, but also I based my selection on specific loose players presense / strong players absense. There are also variations between different parts of the day which are not reflected by above values.

There's nothing wrong with playing in the play money games.
Yes most of those players are just there to have fun and will call bets and raises no matter what they're holding. However, there's nothing saying that you can't still play good cards and get the feel for the game, bet when you think you have the best hand and fold when you don't. Yes, in real poker your good hands will hold up more because there isn't going to be 9 players in to the river every time. But it's practice and more importantly it's very good discipline-- if you can play correctly and learn when to fold in a play money game, boy that would take a tremendous amount of discipline if you ask me.
I also think that it's important for you to read all the books you can get your hands on, study hard, and you can even try observing the real money games on-line. Try to observe the 3-6 and 5-10 games, for at that limit the players will be playing more of a straightfoward game. The higher limits, especially the short-handed games will play too aggressively and may not give you a correct approach on the game.
And at the lower limits you might find it to be too loose, and not far off from the way they play at play money.
I do suggest that you wait until you are of legal age to play, you'll have the rest of your life to play poker if you wish- take this time to read and observe. Poker is not as easy as it may seem and you can lose a lot if not all your money trying to play without having a strong understanding of all its facets and variables. Play in the play money games but please, wait until you are 100% confident before risking your money.

Thanks man!
Great post, it was really inspiring and you made a point. I know that it's not as easy as it looks and I'll be careful and wait a while before I enter the game, but I can't help thinking of the number of players playing at i.e. paradise at the low levels without even trying to figure out the game. I'm not good (yet) but they shure ain't any better, if you know what I'm saying.

I'm so glad I found this board!

There is one thing playing with play money can be helpful for, you can be get really good at reading the board and instantly knowing what the nut hand, 2nd nut, 3rd nut, etc... without the "tuition" of real money play.

Why don't you start a home-game tournament with your buddies. You truly are not going to learn any relevant person-to-person strategy playing "play money" internet games. Try to round some friends up and get them excited about the game. Encourage them to watch the World Poker Tour on the Travel channel and to read Card Player and poker books. That way you can all learn together, play for real money, and practice your techniques and traps. Three years from now, when you can play the real thing in card rooms, you will be better prepared than you ever would have been from playing no-money internet games

I used to be in the same position you were. I was lucky and had alot of friends that were interested in learning poker. I used to play with them and lose all the time because they had about 6 months experience on me. But i became a big student of the game and read every book i could get my hands on. now, a year later i am easily one of the best players in the home games and come home a winner almost every time. I am 18 years old just as you and play alot of online play money poker. it really helps with discipline and experience by getting all types of hands and situations. My suggestion to you is keep playing online and get some friends together to play cards with. i can almost guarantee they'll get hooked .

If you want to use play money online, try playing in play money tournaments. Here the chips have more "meaning" as you have a finite amount and are trying to be the last man standing. Players here play with a lot more realism than in play money ring games.
I don't think you should be to afraid of entering the low limit real money games. One of the fundamental aspects of poker is the fact that in many ways you are playing yourself. You have to know how to have self control and discipline and unlike a poster above I don't think you can learn this with play money as one dose not have anything at stake. You have to experience first hand the feeling of the gutwrench of having your seemingly nutz hand suddenly out drawn at the river by someone holding rage preflop, and deal with how your psyche and its fluctuations can have positive and negative impacts on your game, learn this at low limit poker. You can not learn these things with play money.

Take a trip to Canada and play for real. There are great games to be had in Edmonton and Calgary and you can play there at 18.
