Last night's tough hand, TKarrde, 24. Apr 2003 07:52

Last night I played a short session of low limit hold em online. Hadn't played too many hands but won one pot of about $10. So I'm happy on my 50¢-$1 game. Then near the time that I know I am going to quit. I get TT. I'm in middle position. Goes around with no raise with about 4 other callers. Flop comes A7A. I check waiting to drop after it is bet. Gets called around. Flop comes a rag. I bet the tens. Everyone calls but one player. River comes another rag. I bet. Two players drop and last one calls. My opponent flips up his Ace. I wasn't upset. Just surprised to see it. Did I play it wrong? Was there anything I could do about him slow playing his Ace?

Thanks,

TK

You should be THRILLED he slow played it. Only thing you would probably have saved was the river bet

I think the tens are a high enough pair to try to drive people out (69.5% chance of an overcard on the flop - 86.9% for the whole board). Was he holding Ax or something like AQ?

In the former case a strong preflop raise, might have driven him out, giving you the pot. Of course, this depends on the player, and at those limits, there are a lot of players who will marry Ax. So I gues like always, it depends.

I've noticed a lot of low limit players will slowplay when they flop trips like this, especially aces. If they bet out on the flop, it will be obvious that everyone they have trips and get little money for their strong hand. Try to recognize which players do it; few players will lay down the trips if you have them beat which makes for extra profit.

I agree w/ easy e... It was good for you in the big picture that he slow played it.

on a second note.... this is why i'm turned off by online play... the only play you can put a guy on is by how he bets. you can't see your man, and play against him. I guess I shouldn't knock it, never done it... but I guess I find myself relying on the psychological aspect quite a bit when I play.

You played it fine until the river. Once he calls the turn, you have to check the river (and most likely fold if he bets) because what else could he be on that he would call your turn bet with? Unfortunately, many many many LLHE players will play any Ace, so if 2 Aces flop and you bet at any point and are called, you are most likely beat. In this case, you are lucky it cost you as little as it did.

First, I think that raising preflop with TT would have been apropriate in this situation. When it is folded around to you here, you're interested in driving out other players. Basically this hand plays well against a very large field or heads up. Against a large field you almost certainly need to hit your set, but played heads up your tens will often hold up and be good. Thus, depending on your opponents and what they look like they are planning on doing, a raise here would be fine.

Now assuming you're on the flop here, this is a good time to bet. You want to fold players with overcards to your tens so they don't get a chance to improve on the turn. Any ace beats you, but you almost certainly beat any hand that does not have an ace unless somebody is already tight.

That said, you need to expect slow play from an ace. Betting the flop allows you to test the water in this regard. When I bet a flop like this, if somebody flat calls then they almost certainly have an ace and if they reraise then they almost certainly do not have an ace. Now if I have position over the flat caller then I can take a free ride to the river when they unsuccessfully try to checkraise me and if I do not then I again have no worries. Somebody with ance ace will almost always bet the turn he when checked to and in position and somebody without an ace will be too frightened - of course this depends highly on the player, but in general it is true.

And I just won't bet the river with this holding. I'll call the river if it was checked around on the turn.
