First you need a big bankroll,Like 6 months worth of living expenses if you break even only.Second, develop discipline and do it fast.Temperamental players or emotional players will go broke.Last be prepared to live a quiet lonely life.I don't mean you can't be married or whatever, but the truly great players, who don turn to tournament play, can't have to many friends....you lose your edge if you let too many people get to know you.You can have many friends, but not who play poker.

Hi Jake

You must have a bankroll (200 big bets and 6 months living expenses). Play head and shoulders above the competition. Have a stable life (no substance abuse or emotional problems) and be super mentally tough. VERY tough combination of strenths!

What Roy said is seconded by many. I have a few very successful players as neighbors and friends and they agree with these statements . however they range up to 400+ big bets for bankroll. However the "last" statement of Jake-free is way off base. It boarders on ridiculous.

#1It takes Discipline. And a lot of it.
#2 It takes an adequate bankroll. One that can cover all of your living expences and can withstand all the ups and downs of poker.
#3 You must be better then your competition, way better!
#4 Balance. You must be able to balance your poker career with your outside life. Make sure you spend the quality time with your family that is truly needed in your life to make you feel complete. Without that you have nothing and you truly will not be or feel successful.
#5 Exercise. It's good for the body but even better for your "Mind". It keeps you feeling positive about yourself and it gets rid of all that "Fuzzy Thinking".
#6 Other forms of gambling games. Slot machines, Blackjack, Sports betting... Forget about it, they don't mix. All they will do is "Take you off of your game" and part you from your money. You can't win, period.
#7 Substance abuse. A road to disaster in anyone's life.
#8 Alcohol. A glass of wine with dinner or a night out with the guys is fine, as long as you keep it under control, however... Drinking at the poker table does not mix and will keep you from making clear and soundminded decisions.
#9 If you think you have what it takes to play poker for a living but are willing to overlook #s 1 thru 8... I suggest you read them again.

**Poker is a lot of fun and can be very rewarding in the monetary sense, just learn to keep everything positive in your life, balanced.**
