you're in the early stages,in the small blind holding the :54s, there is a raise and 4 callers ,should you call? and what if you were in the big blind?

So you're against 6 opponents, including the big blind, who may or may not come in, but has a half of a bet there? Well, that's a tough call. You're out of position in the worst way and your suited connectors are piddly. That said, the big blind acting after you isn't a problem since a raise from the big blind is better for your expectation than a fold from the big blind (though you really want him to call) and you are getting in for 1.5 small bets.

It really depends on how good you are at playing the flop. You have to be able to release the idiot end of a straight if it becomes obvious that somebody has a better one and that also really cuts into your expectation.

I think that this call really very much depends on the texture of the game. If you are sure to be paid off when you make your hand and paid off handsomely, then I think a call is appropriate here, but if the table is usually pretty tight and this hand just happened anomolously, then I would chuck them in the muck and not worry too much.

The one thing that you do have going for you is that there is so much money in the pot, pretty much all the players are going to be married to it, so if you make your hand you are in a good place. Where that goes south is if you actually flop a flush, since somebody drawing to a higher flush will definitely be there and will definitley stick around for any number of bets, so you could get redrawn on here and that hurts your expectation a little.

So yeah - I would call with this on a loose passive table and chuck it to a tighter trickier table.

generally I wouldn't call even though technically you might have the right odds. I tend to throw those odds out because when you calculate pot odds, you are thinking about positive expectations over a long period of time. In a tournament, its about cash preservation and building a stack. So consistently playing drawing hands that give you 10% winning odds on 12% pot odds might not be very profitable in tournaments whereas it should be profitable in the long run playing in regular games.

I am curious how everyone else feels about that.

Since you are early in the tournament and the blind structure isn't too hefty, I think a call is warranted provided you can get away from the hand if you miss or hit just a little. I once heard John Juanda say that early in limit hold'em tourny's, he likes to play these types of hands to try and build a stack for later on. Obvioulsy as others have pointed out, if the BB is a frequent raiser, then your implied odds aren't right to call as you may be facing a re-raise. However, with all the action in there, I think it is worth it to call in the hopes that you flop your monster (wheel, two pair, other straight).
