Thanks to all who made comments on my last thread about cold calling 3 raises on AKo. I've now read Lee Jones' book and have a much greater appreciation of Starting hands, position, amount being bet and pot odds. My question to the more experienced players is as follows.

After reading Jones I have a great understanding of starting hands, but some of the subtle points of post flop play still are a bit fuzzy. However I am winning very consistantly now both online and B&M. Actually it's kind of scary how much a bit of education has imporved my game. The question is this, when you were in my place is this experience of better play without total understanmding of why its so much better common? I mean, I undestand how to start and what position gives me the best chance to bluff or semi bluff but I feel like I have a better feel for the game and not so much of a better understanding post flop. Does this make sence?

Anyway, I'd appreciate any feedback on where I should take my education to next.

Thanks,

John

Hi,
The books have taught you premium starting hands and positional play pre-flop but I think you need to read a lot more on the subjects of flop, turn and river play.
You also need to get a better feel for the game and the true understanding of play by play poker. David Sklansky's books, "Theory of Poker" and "Texas hold-em for advanced players" will be very helpful.
Mike Caro's "Book of Tells" will help you to get a better "read" on your opponents.

Hello John,

Yes I did experience the same type of thing as you. Except that, unlike you, I didn't realize how little about post flop play I really understood until I got burned.

The thing is, that if you read even a little, you do know a hell of a lot more about the game than many other players. If those are the only ones who you play against then you will have a massive edge. There is more to Hold'em than starting hands, position and pot odds, but it is surprising how many players at the lowest limits don't *even* think about those things.

Although the information contained in poker books, on its own, won't make you a good Hold'em player, not knowing it will sure as hell make you a bad one.

Good luck and may all of your opponents believe that A4o is a good hand,

Snorbolus
