You can't win the tournament in the first limit, but you can sure as hell lose it there. Winning tournaments is a lot about getting lucky. You must have some chips when it is your turn to be lucky. Now, by lucky, I don't mean drawing a one card out, although that is what it might come down to. I mean that when you are fortunate enough to be dealt a good hand you have the resources to back it up and break your opponent. Paul Stine College Station, TX | ||

| Both and neither. You must have a very fluid and ductile style in order to be successful at limit tournaments. As Paul correctly points out, there is a lot of ass-sitting early on. Play like a rock and wait for giant hands. The blinds won't hurt you much, but losing a hand will hurt you a lot. Tournaments are about survival, not chiplead, limit tournaments even moreso. As a rule of thumb, I play very tight in a limit tournament as long as I have at least 20 big bets. As soon as I have less than 20 big bets I start to loosen up as the blinds can now get painful. That's not to say that I play loose, but that I play what would be considered fairly tight for a ring game. Of course drawing hands are often less worth playing than in a ring game because limit tournaments are usually very tight and thus you'll be playing each hand against a small field. Also, you'll find that every player at your table, soon into the tournament, will be able to go all-in on a hand that is played all the way through. Thus playing the hands becomes more like no-limit play. You only want to put your money in on a hand that you can win. Sure you might be getting pot odds for a draw, but they are negated when not making the draw puts you out of the tourney. Your stack is finite and the last few chips are worth a lot more than the first few. Now when you do take a commanding chip lead late in the game, you can bully the small stacks as in no limit. You can put another player all in for 5% of your stack with your pair of ducks on an attempt to steal his blind and if he calls with AK you're a slight favourite. He's taking all the risk and you're taking almost none. Nonetheless, when you're a huge stack and it is bubble time, again it becomes time to sit still and let other blind out until you get in the money. Don't be too anxious to steal with inferior cards or to call a steal with bad cards just because your stack is big. Lastly, desperation time, when you're going to blind out, is almost identical to no-limit. Get all-in preflop with any ace or with any two cards over 10 or any pair and hope to steal or get lucky. | ||

| I think that the correct answer is c) both tight and loose play at the appropriate times. The thing is that when the blinds are really low in the beginning, tight play is usually best. However, when the blinds start going up, you need to play more aggressive or you'll get sucked up. Another time to play aggressive is when it gets close to the money and people start putting on the brakes and just trying to hang on, then you can steal more. | ||
