| I am new to poker and I play LL hold-em. I normally play 1-3 spread limit. I know the basics of the game but find myself struggling in games. I think I stay in with hands I shouldn't and fold hands I could have played. I seem to lose most of the time and I am starting to feel unlucky. I get distracted easily and very discouraged when I fold a hand that I could have won with. I know that poker is a game of skill that takes time to master. I love the game and want to improve my chances of profiting from it. Any advice would be much appreciated. | ||

| Read. Read some more. Then reread. Then read again. Pick up Lee Jones' book - great for beginners at Hold'em. You might also pick up Poker for Dummies - not a bad read for a beginner. Read articles in CardPlayer Magazine ( www.cardplayer.com ) and read this forum. There is no quick and easy way to master poker. It takes time and experience, but that time can be cut down if you profit from the mistakes of others by reading. Don't feel bad if you fold cards that eventually become the winner - just make good folds and then forget about what you held. Any two cards can flop a full house, but not any two cards are playable preflop. Respect the importance of position. I cannot stress enough how much better off you are on the puck than under the gun. Position is everything in hold'em. There are a lot of hands you can limp on the puck with that you cannot think about playing in the UTG, such as J9o, KTo, 22, etc. (note thought that sometimes oddball hands can be played in oddball places depending on table texture, etc...just that for a beginner these things shouldn't enter into your thoughts). Don't make catastrophic folds. If there are 25 big bets in the pot you should be able to call one river bet if you think there is any small but reasonable chance that you can win. You've got 2 pair and the board could have a straight *and* a flush, but you think there is a 1:20 chance that you are good. Then put in one bet to a pot of 25. Know pot odds. There are times when you should draw to a gutshot (if there is enough money in the pot) but most of the time you chuck that garbage in the muck. Most of the time you can draw to a flush draw, but again there are times to throw it away too. Most importantly, don't ever move up to a higher limit than you are playing until you are *absolutely* and *unequivically* SURE that you can beat it. I hope that helps. And have heart. If you are smart and you work hard, then you can be a great poker player. All it takes is patience, time, and something of a bankroll. | ||

Make the correct play for the correct reason. Make the correct decision. The money will take care of itself. Now, study and learn what the correct decisions are. Paul Stine College Station, TX

| Paul is wise. Emotional detachment is one of the most important parts of the game. Remember that the chips are just for keeping score. Don't think of them as real money until you're done. If I thought of the chips as real money I would have said something like, "I just lost well over a month's rent today," on Friday when all I ended up saying was, "That sucks...my hourly win rate went down a little. Oh well, at least I put lots of time in." | ||

| i can relate. it's frustrating to flop a full house when you've mucked your hole cards before the flop. but good players throw away many more winning hands than they play. (ie crummy starting hands often would have won, but of course in the long run they won't.) i improved my game a lot by getting Texas Turbo Hold Em, reading Card Player magazine and a book called Zen Poker. | ||

"Zen and the Art of Poker" (1999) is by L . W. Phillips. 'Wayno' has recently had another poker book published called "The Tao of Poker". (Adams Media, 2003) The most recent book contains 258 "rules" and focuses more on the play of the game than his first work which centered more on the psychology of the player. In 'Tao', the author states Rule No. 20 as: "Concentrate on how you are playing, not on whether you are winning." It might be interesting to note that in Chapter Three (Making Correct Decisions) there are three rules entitled: "Make correct decisions." Of course, Mike Caro's mantra has always been the same. You get payed to make the right decision". "And you make the right decisions, ALWAYS" "play your best game all the time" IAALPAPWFSM. -t

| We all just call it the tilt book. The first chapter alone is worth buying the book. "Punnish your opponents with your folds." | ||
