7-Stud No Ante stradegy, Mark, 20. Apr 2003 14:38

I've read Super System and 7-stud for advanced players and have been winning at 7-stud for a few months now. However, there is one situation i encountered that was not covered in either of the 2 books i mentioned and would like any 7-stud players ideas on the subject.

I just tried Paradise Poker the other day. I bought in for a small amount and started checking out all the games. In a low-limit 7-stud game there was no ante. (at the last casino i visited there was a $2-10 spread limit 7-stud game with no ante).

The question i have is this. With no ante and tight opponents, is there any point to trying to steal the bring-in?

If you succed, all you gain is the bring-in, so it doesn't seem worth it.

Also, if you raise with a premium pair and everyone folds, is it a waste? Again, all you win is the bring in.

With no ante to start a pot, opponents are right to play very tight. So should i be limping in with Aces on 3rd at a tight table, and start raising on 4th?

Thanks for your thoughts

if the game is tight you should limp in early position but raise in late position. be sure to mix it up a little though

you might want to wait till 5th if things are passive.

raise often with Live big pairs/ cards on 4th is ok if players willing to pass or pay off

Hi Mark,
I address this in an on-line column on www.thepokerforum.com in a 7-Stud article.
You should NOT try to steal the antes/bring-in in an anteless game because the risk:benefit is so large. However, if the pot has been loosely called by a couple or three people before you then, on occasion, you can attempt a steal against tight players. If, for example, you've seen these rocks fold to a $5.0 raise after they have called the $1.00 then you might try stealing their tiny call every now and again with a scare card.
I also suggest making a distinction between how you handle Aces (and Kings when no Aces are out) and how you handle the other Premium pairs. I would raise the full $5.00 with 10s, Js, or Qs -- willing to win the minuscule pot but hoping for a call from a single opponent. But with Aces, I would raise only a smaller amount -- or perhaps not at all if I thought everyone would fold -- saving the bet for Fourth Street. You want to get heads up going in to Fifth Street. Sometimes the best strategy is to raise $2.00 or $3.00 on Third -- if you think you will only elicit a call or two. On Fourth, if it's multi-way it's sometimes best to try for a check-raise--especially if you have built some reputation for bluffing.
Again, check out www.thepokerforum.com for a more complete explanation.
