When your playing in a tournament if your original buy-in is $500,
at the end of the third level, if you are under the amount of chips that they started you out with then you can do what they call a RE-BUY.
That means if they started you with $1,000 in chips, at that point you would be able to get the same amount of chips for the cost of the original buy-in, how ever much it was.
An ADD ON means, even if you were not below the amount of chips that they started you out with after the third level, you would still be allowed to buy more chips if you desired for the fee of the original buy-in. If you were under the amount in chips after the third level, you can do BOTH, ADD ON and RE-BUY.
The add-ons and the re-buys will give you a much better chip position but will cost you that much more money.
The choice would be yours at that time.
(The re-buys and the add-ons can be quite costly but if you feel that you want to continue playing in the tournament, those are just a few extra options available to you.)
I hope this helped you, and good luck in the tournament!

For a humorous look at rebuys and satellites, here is a link to a Negreanu article called "Party Day".

http://www.pokerpages.com/articles/archives/negreanu03.htm

(To read the other articles, just change the "03" to any number between "01" & "13") Additionally, I would mention that if you open a "POKER" file in your "Favorites" in your Explorer, then open a Negreanu Articles subfolder, and save the article as "Negreanu Pokerpages Article 03 Fullcontact Poker Partyday" you can save articles of interest by person or by subject. I just mentioned what I have set up for myself to keep track of what I read and by subject as I learn to play better (hopefully).
