| I just started playing limit hold em at a card room. I do all right but have one question. When playing 4-6 hold em and you are close to the button would you hold AXo at least enough to see the flop? I have noticed some people do this and a lot of times they are taking the pot. Does this have to do with luck or more on there betting skills | ||

If a player is on a "rush" and chooses to limp in with the AXo, well then he is simply playing a rush but not necessarily playing good starting hands. The skill part of poker comes from how you play the hand after the flop, knowing what hands could be out there, releasing your hand if you feel you may be out-kicked, having the ability to isolate your weaker opponents,etc.. But, that doesn't mean that playing AXo will be a profitable hand in the long run. If you're new to poker then I suggest you play premium starting hands and pick your spots carefully when you enter a pot and keep in mind that your position should be used to benefit your odds and not decrease them. Position is extremely important in hold-em. Whether you decide to play AXo in that position may have a lot to do with the texture of the game. But usually the lower limit hold-em games are fairly loose and when a game is of that nature, I would tend to play a little tighter. Now, playing AXsuited on the button with multiple callers for no raise can be played, just pick your spots, and don't get caught up about the player who just got lucky while playing a bad hand. 4 POKER | ||

| Just about every question in poker is an "it depends," but since you are a beginner I'm not going to tell you about certain oddball situations where it is ok to play this hand. In general, throw it away and wait for better cards. You can't beat the table by playing the same as them. The problem with this hand is that if you hit an ace, one of three outcomes is likely. You have the only ace and will win a small pot., you have a smaller ace than somebody else and put money in and lose a big pot, or you have a smaller ace than somebody else and fold when you realize this. Generally speaking, you're better off not to get involved. Now if you think that you can isolate a limper, for instance, by raising on the puck and taking out the blinds, then your AX might be ok. If you hit an ace you might be able to convince the limper that you have a better ace than he and fold him off his hand. You might be able to bluff at it when a garbagey flop comes...there are a number of things that might work. But in general, fold your AXo's. | ||

| I am new at this also but have logged hundreds of hours playing low limit online in the last few months. When I hold less than premium hands I find that I am often confronted with decisions after the flop that I am not yet comfortable making. weird draws, low pair with overcards etc. These are difficult hands to play and very dependent on position. I don't play them well often enough and lose money. By only holding premium hands, for example, nothing below an A 10 off suit unless on or next to the button then maybe A9 when the flop comes I am in the position to play my hand well and can make accurate reads of other hands. | ||
