HELP!! I'm gonna play a B&M game!, TKarrde, 17. Apr 2003 09:54

Try to make this cut and dry. Up until two weeks ago I hadn't played much poker. Played Hold Em at a casino once in October. Lost $160 in about an hour at $5-$10. Is that what you call a fish?? :) Then read alot online. In January went back and lost $40 in about 2.5 hours. Bought a book and read alot more. In February went to a $2-$4 table at a different casino and won $80. Still read since then but hadn't a chance to play. Was getting frustrated so I started to play on line. Been playing 25¢-50¢ and keeping track of it. Have won 8 big bets per hour over about 35 hours. I know. Not much time.

So here is what I need help on. Going back to that $5-$10 game tomorrow. Any advice?? Besides playing tight? How might the live game be different? How might the limits change the game? Etc???

On a side note. I am going during a Friday morning. We have off for Good Friday. What kind of players will I see at the casino (this is a casino boat in southern indiana without another casino for 2 hours) during a weekday morning? I am worried that it will be only really really strong players.

Thanks,

TK

Hi there,

If they have any lower limits than 5-10, you should play those, even if the rake is really steep and hard to beat, while you are still learning, it's still better to hang out at the lower limits. Consider any money you lose as tuition to your poker education. If they don't have anything lower than 5-10, then you should only play with money you can afford to lose. Play aggressive when you think you have the best of it, but don't be stubborn when the cards turn against you. For instance, if you've been betting your nut flush aggressively and the board pairs on the river, somebody bets out, you gotta shut down. If you've been playing your pocket AA's hard, but then a fourth flush or straight card comes, you gotta shut down. You have to be able to quickly adapt to changing situations. Some of these things seem obvious, but one of the most common errors people make at when they are starting out is getting married to their good starting hands, even if they don't hit anything. Remember that at the end of a session, each bet saved is exactly the same as each bet won. Milking good situations for more bets is the easy part, the hard part is knowing when to make a difficult laydown or knowing when your marginal holding is still good.

Good Luck!

Don't be so quick, at lower limits, to fold on river if someone raises -- I win a lot of hands against good players bluffing and semi-bluffing people out at the river. Save money by folding earlier, not chasing, but don't be so quick to fold at the river "with a nut flush" or even less. Not unless you really KNOW the raiser.

Don't worry about Friday morning. Weekday mornings are not a bad time to play. When the tourists are there the sharks smell the blood in the water and come swimming on in anyway.

The good thing about weekday mornings is that there are great players there who are now really tired because they have been up all night chasing the fish that won't leave. They won't be on their best game. There are lucky fish from the night before who won a lot and have been losing it all back. Then there is the senior trafic. You get old people with nothing to do who wake up in the morning and head to the card room. Most of them are terrible players, but some are good.

Notwithstanding, it is a holliday, so it may as well be a Saturday morning. You'll get all strokes there.

Wish all that were true. But this will be intersting as I will get there right when the Casino opens. I know... strange phenomenon, but out here in the midwest they actually close them down for a few hours in the morning. Gonna be weird walking into an empty casino.

See new thread..... it didn't! :(

Although I was disappointed because we were suppose to leave at 11:00. Tables opened at 11:00. We didn't leave until 11:45. I could have gotten in 45 minutes. I wouldn't have cared if I folded every hand for 45 minutes. It would have been more fun and less costly.

Whatever limit you chose to play, play good. Don't play tight and scared because you're playing a higher limit, play good solid hands, don't be afraid to make the moves that you sometimes need to make during a hand, be aggresive when you are getting the best of it.
If you feel that you are not playing the game the way you usually do because now you're at a 5-10 level, then that limit may be and probably is too high for you right now.
As far as playing on a holiday... I don't know much about riverboat casinos but I do know one thing, Whenever I go to a casino on a holiday, the action is fantastic and everyone is out to gamble!!
Sure, you'll get your regular share of sharks, too, but all in all, you will find that many more people are not pro's and they are there strictly to have a good time.
Good luck this weekend... try to scope the games out first before plopping your butt in the chair!!

'Nother bad thing about these boats. Not many poker tables. So nothing to scope out. You don't get to choose. You sign up. Get your name called. And go where they tell you. :(

I usually do play tight and aggressive. Probably not as well as I think I do. I'll just try to think of it as just bets. And not think of the amounts. But I'm only bringing 20 big bets to the table. And leaving after I lose 10. I like to have the other 10 there in case I get a good hand when I get close to my limit. Or live out the fantasy of having the absolute rocks and having some one bet at me heads up and not back down. I'd rather be playing at the $2-$4 table in Louisville but whole reason I'm making it to Evansville is to get my car serviced.

Thanks guys.
