Where to start with On-Line Poker, donr, 16. Apr 2003 13:20
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
I have been playing 15-30 Hold'em at my local casino. I only have time to play at the max of once a week.

I have been thinking about playing on-line and was wondering where (or if) I should start. What do I need to look for and look out for!

Thanks,
Don

I would not start at 15-30 online. Anything above 5-10 can be very tough and aggressive.

As for what to look out for, it depends on your game. As you can't get tells from online players, it is much more important to write down things you see other players do so that you can make better decisions in situations. If you play tight aggressive poker, on-line can be as much of a winning game as B&M can, if not more so.

Thanks for the info! Maybe I will see you there.

What is everyone's pick of where to play?

Ultimate Bet seems to be the best place to play ring games these days. The WPT's Aruba episode brought a tidal wave of new (read: soft) players trying out the software. However, the majority of them are playing very low limits (1 cent-2 cent up to about $2-4). Pokerstars is probably the best site for tournaments; they have 10-15 of them daily, and spread Hold'em, Omaha/O8 and Stud/Stud8 tourneys.

Most of the sites have pretty good promos (for example freerolls, member reward clubs, etc.) Ultimate Bet is in the process of giving away 2 free WSOP main event seats right now; the first has already been given away but they're holding a second tournament within the next few weeks. Pokerstars is also giving away WSOP seats.

Paradise Poker is "the old standby". It is (I believe) the oldest online cardroom, and the one with the highest traffic. The others (including UB, Pokerstars, Party Poker, etc.) seem to be catching up though.

I'd also recommend signing up to Cardplayer's Online Poker Newsletter. It dispels a lot of common myths about online poker, announces promotions and contains some interesting articles.

Anybody play at Poker Room? I have been winning consistently there for the past few weeks playing mostly 1-2 and 2-4. Seems to be very fishy to me (although see my No Foldem Low Limit posting below where I caught a bad night in a very loose room).

It is mostly Hold em but they have added new games. The single table tourneys are pretty good there too (I have won 5 out of 7).

Seems like the right amount of newbies/fishies to make some good money. Anybody else have good experiences there?

The 1-2 and 2-4 are really good, but the players get a lot better at 3-6 and 5-10. I have a MAC so I don't have much for comparison, but I like it there.

Yes, I have.
I don't play there too often because I really enjoy playing in the Omaha games more on Party Poker...The selection of Omaha games is incredible.
However, I do play at pokerroom occassionally and I find that there hold-em games are very, very soft and pretty easy to beat.
There stud 8 games are great as well if you're interested in split games.
I wouldn't start out at a 15-30 level though, it plays so much bigger on-line then in a casino and I personally would not want to take that risk.
You just never know...

Yeah, I'm starting to get addicted to Omaha, so I'll have to get a PC to play on Party poker, if that's where the good O8 games are. Pokerroom has a good fishy 1-2, but that's usually the only one they got going. I guess they just added Omaha, so maybe it will just take awhile for it to catch on.

I guess it's good, it'll keep me from moving up until I am ready.

I play at Partypoker.com and the new pokerpages site, bugsys.com, which I entered via the interesting poker site www.thehendonmob.com. Partypoker has good games and the annual qualification for the Partypoker Million cruise, you qualify NL or limit but the cruise was limit poker. www.bugsys.com has IMO the best table layout around and the strongest playmoney promotion going: One $10,000 entry to any tournament in the world in a three-tiered, multi-table qualification structure. Ultimatebet is a good site too, with the bonus of the large schools of fish ... :) I have not yet been able to download successfully Planetpoker, but I have heard good things about that site. Paradise Poker wins hands down for beauty and decor, also the biggest online site out there. They go to great pains to have their shuffling routine audited and this audit can be viewed on the site with great detail, something most sites can not, will not, or have not thought of doing.

Shorn is also right to work your way up in tables, since some of the top tables are aggressive and you have to get used to the faster pace of online poker. If you have any questions, this forum is the place to ask. I hope this helps.

Well, my two cents on the matter is don't.

I play online for fun or when I want to take a ten minute break from my day job while a compile is going. Yes, there are numerous people who make lots of money playing online, but there are even more mouthpieces screaming that they got ripped off. Do I think the online casinos are safe? Yeah ... probably. Do I think that one could dissapear with everybody's money? I could see it happening and I wouldn't be too shocked. Will I put $100 there? Why not? I won't put thousands there though. Besides, you can find very competent opposition online playing $1-$2, but I find worse players at the B&M casino on $10-$20. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to do that math.

But yeah...if you have spare time kicking around at home and you want to give it a go, then I would suggest playing head-up sit-n-gos on ultimatebet...they are *very* fishy and can make you some decent money.
