| Last night's big losing hand. LLHE Holding AJo in mid position. Flop comes KQT rainbow. I bet. Couple callers then a raise. I reraise. He reraises. Turn. Blank. I bet. He raises. I three bet. He caps. River comes K. No flush out there. Same bet scenario. He beats me with KQ. Should I have backed off on the River? Thanks, TK | ||

| You're holding the nuts, so jamming it is ok until you are not holding the nuts, however you might want to consider just calling his raise in order to not fold out the others in the hand. Obviously when you are holding the nuts you don't want to chase away runners. Now your opponent has top two pair which has only 4 outs to a tight so this was indeed a bad beat - he thought he was good when he was drawing slim and should know better with a scary board like that. When he did make on the river, I would say that you have to assume that either he's been a dummy and made his tight or that you are chopping...either way there is no reason for you to put more money in the pot. Really there is a very slim chance that you are going to get the whole thing, so I think that a check/call on the river is warranted. Though if you know him to be a little stupid and think that he might have the worse straight, etc, then going 2 bets on the river is marginally ok to think about. Then it really becomes a matter of how much you trust your reads, etc. On the whole though, I think you played this hand well and got beat. It happens. | ||

| I agree. The river is a check/call or bet/call raise situation. The only mistake I see is you three betting the river...you can only be called (or raised in the case) by a hand that you either tie or can't beat. Bottom line though, it was a tough beat... | ||

| Yeah, once the board pairs you need to shut down, especially with all that paint which makes the full house more likely. You don't necessarily fold, but stop giving action. When the pot is that big, you would have to be SURE that your opponent has the Full House to fold. Anyway, the good news is that when you flop the nuts, guys like that usually aren't going to make it with that few outs. It sucks when you start out with the nuts and get drawn out, but sometimes it happens. | ||

| YES. You have to assume you're either chopping or he has you beat on the river, and check/call. | ||

| I wouldn't have raised on the flop given the K-Q on the board for fear of A-K or KK. The pre-flop reraise indicates high odds of others holding such hands. Would have been better to check and fold on the river with a raise. | ||

| oops, you had the nut straight, I rescind my prior opinion. I would have bet the hand for value as you did | ||

| Any time you have the nuts, put as much in there as possible. You did everything right on the flop and the turn. I would have backed off on the river though. Anytime the board pairs with cards that high, it's much more likely that someone made the tight than if it were a pair of rags. With another player jamming the pot also, I would have figured him to have AJ for the nuts as well, and would have just called the river even if the board hadn't paired, unless there were other players still donating to the pot. Why contribute more to the rake? =) Lee | ||

| One exception. When you are holding the nuts, but you suspect your opponent of holding the nuts with redraws, then ease up. There is nothing better than holding JcQc to a flop of TcKdAc, being heads up, and playing somebody with another JQ who underestimates you. Somebody who learned somewhere, "If you're holding the nuts you should never stop raising until you are all in" ... "I'll keep raising," says the silly man, "Me too, says I." "You know we're just going to end up chopping?" he offers - nice gesture that. "I don't think you've got it," I'll say as I raise. Now the 20-bet is done and there's an all-in. What the? Why yes, I'm freerolling you for a flush draw ... what on Earth did you think I was holding? So as a cautionary tale, don't let that happen. Also, know that your ace high flush is not always the nut flush when a straight flush is possible, nomatter how unlikely. | ||

| It's time to check/call the river since it looks like you're either dead or up against another AJ. | ||
