| Ok. This is my first post but I have been a reader for sometime now and I know from reading that 95% of you guys are honestly trying to give good advise and that is great for the poker community. So here's the hand I recently played on Pokerstars in a NL HE tournament: PokerStars Game #54925095: Tournament #82940, Hold'em No Limit - Level II (15/30) - 2003/04/13 - 00:27:26 (EST) Table '82940 1' Seat #9 is the button Seat 1: Beagle_Boy (2105 in chips) Seat 2: dagoods (1150 in chips) Seat 3: ME (1360 in chips) Seat 6: 95stock (1870 in chips) Seat 7: SweetH2O (3995 in chips) Seat 9: RickyEarl (3020 in chips) Beagle_Boy: posts small blind 15 dagoods: posts big blind 30 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to ME [9d 9c] ME: calls 30 95stock: folds SweetH2O: folds RickyEarl: raises 60 to 90 Beagle_Boy: calls 75 dagoods: folds ME: calls 60 *** FLOP *** [3c Ad 9s] Beagle_Boy: checks ME: checks RickyEarl: bets 300 Beagle_Boy: folds ME: raises 300 to 600 RickyEarl: calls 300 *** TURN *** [3c Ad 9s] [3s] ME: bets 670 and is all-in RickyEarl: calls 670 *** RIVER *** [3c Ad 9s 3s] [Ah] *** SHOW DOWN *** ME: shows [9d 9c] (a full house, Nines full of Aces) RickyEarl: shows [Ac Jd] (a full house, Aces full of Threes) RickyEarl collected 2840 from pot *** SUMMARY *** Total pot 2840 | Rake 0 Board [3c Ad 9s 3s Ah] Seat 3: ME showed [9d 9c] and lost with a full house, Nines full of Aces Seat 9: RickyEarl (button) showed [Ac Jd] and won (2840) with a full house, Aces full of Threes What the answer here? Is it a bad beat? Should I have gone all-in before the flop or on the flop? Additionally, has anyone else notice that these long-shots seem to occur at PokerStars more than other site, specifically in situations like the one above when players are all-in. I also play at Paradise and I have become accustom to one-outers and the like, but it seems that it happens at Pokerstars in these kinds of situatiions way more than it should. I am definitely not accusing them of cheating or anything like(maybe it could be a flaw in their software??) that I am just curious if others have noticed this phenomena or if I am just baised. Anyways thanks for your help . | ||

| This is a tough beat. He caught his two outer on the river to beat you. You SHOULD NOT go all in pre-flop with 99. I suppose you could have considered going all-in on the flop to get the $$ there, but why? There weren't any draws to speak of with an A93 flop, so you want him to call your big bet there. Going all in on the turn was the right play and he did what you wanted him to do there...called with the worst of it and with terrible pot odds for his two outer. I know you lost the pot and were out of the tourny, but you should consider the hand a "win" by the Fundamental Theory of Poker terms. Long run, keep making those good decisions and you will come out a winner. | ||

The favorite still wins in this example. It's weird that this happnes more when two ppl are all-in. Just looking for a different veiwpoint. Thanks | ||

| Of course it is a bad beat and I think you played it just fine. You got all your money in while you had the best of it and your opponent hit his 2-outer on the river. The more experience you get, the more often you will see this sort of thing happen. It happens again and again and again. It is lousy as all hell, but it happens tonnes. That said, it seems like it happens more online than off, but I really do believe that this is a function of two things. 1) More hands played per hour - you only remember the interesting hands and there are twice as many of those too, so it seems like more crazy crap happens. 2) Justice is not seen to be done - you can't see what is going on in a server in Costa Rico, so it is naturally common for you to be suspicious. Yeah, it is possible that the online sites can cheat, but think about it this way...they make so much money - tonnes and tonnes and tonnes of money - doing honest business. Why would they cheat for chump change? Now if you were playing with thousands, then maybe it would be worth their while to cheat, but otherwise why would they? Are the cheating everybody - even at the small limits? Nope...lots of people make a living playing online...I know a few people in this camp and none of them have some special deal going to cheat other players. So yeah...taking the beats really blows, but it is part of poker. It might seem unfair at first that they get to suck out on you, but you don't get to suck out on them because you never play terrible hands in the first place, but think of it this way. Life is terribly unfair for the bad bad poker players as they weren't born with a brain functional enough to stop playing their bad hands. Bide your time, play good cards, and the long run will be very kind to you. | ||
