I believe that I am a critical thinker but I never really got into the math in school. Just was the guy pulling a weak B and on the the next class. But , now I have decided to dedicate myself to the game at some point in the future. The question: are study and experience enough or do I need to re-take some classes(with a better attitude)and if so which would best serve the purpose.
Thanks guys.
John

Most poker math is well server by My Dear Aunt Sally type of arithmetic.
You might want to take some statistics as well. However a technical mathematics class might be better suited to your needs. I would also recommend a psycology course also.

Good recommendation. I'd say that a couple psychology courses would be more beneficial than a couple math courses wrt improving at poker, since the essence of poker is "getting into your opponents' heads" and all. I minored in psychology, found many of the courses quite interesting, and find that I think about a lot of the concepts I learned at the table. Cognitive & Social Psychology, and Social Cognition would be good picks if you opt to go this route.

An introduction to probability course would be your best bet, as it will teach you about combinations & permutations, expected value, etc. However, many of the poker books out there provide a thorough explanation of the important probability concepts as they apply to poker, and cost a fraction of what you would pay to learn them through a course.

Inexpensive poker titles which discuss these concepts include Krieger's "Poker for Dummies" and Peter Steiner's "Thursday Night Poker". The latter is geared toward home games moreso than casino ring games, but has a very clear explanation of pot odds, implied odds, etc. I haven't read it myself, but I would imagine that Sklansky's "Theory of Poker" discusses these concepts in fine detail.

As Wren pointed out, an introductory probability course is a good idea. Every university and college should have some kind of course like this and probably something that you could enter just to take the one course as a part time student. I still lhave the recommended text for my second year probility course and it covers everything you would need insofar as math that is applicable to poker. It starts with general probability, unions of events, Bayes' Theorem, etc. The book is by J.G. Kalbfleisch (dean of Math at U of Waterloo) and is called _Probability and Statistical Inference_

Do not waste your money on a college pschology course. It was required as part of my course of study for my degree and was the biggest waste of time I have ever experienced. Read Caro's book of Tells, watch his videos and gain experience by playing at the tables. The 250.00 an hour for the college course would do better to bolster your bankroll.

I disagree solidly with this statement.

Taking psychology 101 will probably not do too much for your game if all you do is go to lectures and write multiple choice exams. If you actually use this as a window into the theory of human psychology and then do your own independant study, there is a wealth of literature out there.

Advancing past an introductory course into such areas as cognitive science can also lead to valuable information.

Don't be too quick to dismiss any field of study - even something as paltry as a first year psychology course can be a great boon to your life in many areas if you choose to squeeze more juice from the course than most do.
