Limit Hold Em vs NL and PL, TKarrde, 14. Apr 2003 09:36

I'm very new at playing. Have about 30 whopping hours under my belt. But before I really started playing I read about everything I could on the internet and bought a couple of books. I have focused on low limit as that is in my budget and feel competent at it for the level of experience that I have. Started playing online at 25¢-50¢ table one week ago and have made over $120. Which I think is great for this level. Soon I'll try the next limits up and see how I do. But the thing that got me interested in serious poker has been the WSOP that I have seen on ESPN the past couple years. That and the fact that I hang with a bunch of gamblers and I suck at BJ so I needed to find something to do at the casino.

But now after all that... here is my question. What are the major differences in play LLHE vs PL and NL?? I will soon be going for broke and trying the 1¢-2¢ NL game ($2 max buy) just to see what it is like. But was curious as to the difference. I have a feeling that these are practically two different games.

Thanks,

TK

First of all, if you're going to play blackjack, learn how to count down a deck and play a +EV game. Buy Standford Wong's book and buy Frank Scoblete's book.

Second, don't move up in limits. 30 hours is a drop in the bucket. Play and have fun at the piddly limits for a long time. Move up when you are being put to sleep at the low limits and don't move up until you have 300 big bets in your bankroll for the limit that you plan to play. It sounds like a lot, but you will need it to beat the inevitable swings.

Lastly, no limit when compared to limit is like comparing apples to volkswagans. They are very different games. Learn how to play limit before trying to play no limit or pot limit. At first they seem like essentially the same game, but the more experience you get the more differences you will see.

Oh and as an afterthought, don't think too much of yourself because of short term wins. Play tonnes and tonnes at the cheap games before you move up. Nobody ever says, "If only I had moved up in limits my life wouldn't have fallen apart."

Counting cards?? I don't think so. That is why I got away from BJ. Just not any fun. And if I can't have fun (and win) then I don't wanna play. Probably why I have no interest in Stud of Omaha right now. Seems like too much work. But I am new... will I say this in a year from now??!!??

Re Limits : Yep, I am happy where I am at. It is fun. And I am winning. But the problem comes from the fact that there are lots of bad players at this level. Not that I am complaining. That is where I am making my money. But to that point. I don't know if I am any good. Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know. I am rushing it. But sooner or later I've gotta try. I've been very disciplined about playing (and my play). I tell myself that I will play only 2 hours on the computer and stick to it. Or I say I play until I lose $5 or win $10. And stick to it. I say I am going to get my bankroll up to $100 before I got to the 50¢-$1 game. And I did that. Then I lost $10 in 30 minutes and thought I should go back down. :) I've already withdrawn my initial investment. So I feel better about play. (I am way to conservative to gamble on line.... I really can't believe I am doing it.... but so hard to make it to casino... and having so much fun.) Well, I think you give some good advice. I'll get that bankroll up to $300 or so before I hit the $1 game. The worst part is doing the math... well if I can win 8 big bets an hour at 50¢ then if I play $4 I can make $xxx!!!! I know it doesn't translate that way.

Thanks for the advice. And for some spice I'll jump in the $2 max buy NL game just to see how different it is.

Why not? Counting cards is relatively easy to learn how to do well and while you don't want the house to know that you are doing it, it isn't illegal or imoral. You're just using every advantage to beat them at their game. If you're going to play blackjack without counting then you may as well play the slot machines.

As for the fun, winning money at the casino is fun - losing it is not fun - to quote Hackers, "there is no good and evil, only fun and boring." I promise you that if you play enough hold'em it'll get boring...unless you are able to apreciate it for its subtlety - certainly the novelty will wear off.

ok...very important: You can beat the low limit games by playing ABC - playing Lee Jones. You just play hands that you are supposed to and put money in when you have the best of it, fold when you don't. As you move up, you need to develop a repertoir of advanced plays and this takes a lot of experience. Move up very slowly. Also note that you can't beat the bigger games as much as the smaller games. If you're playing in a B&M 5-10 game full of rank beginners, you might be able to make consistently 2 big bets per hour. Now move up to a 10-20 where the good players are better and the fish are fewer and you'll have real trouble making more than 1.5 BB/hour - probably only reasonable to make about 1. Now move up to a 50-100 game and if you're really very sharp, you should be happy to be making .5 BB/hour.

I don't know what Roy's stats are like, but he's the Vegas Pro who's opinion I respect most and I'd be very surprised to find out that he beats the 60-120 at the Bellagio for more than about half a big bet per hour. Playing poker really is about squeezing the juice out of a stone and the higher the limits, the less juice. Be careful and go slow.

And stay away from no limit until you have read a lot about no limit. At least if you are going to play it, expect to lose any money you bring to the table and feel happy and lucky if you don't.
