I have a really annoying habbit that is when i am watched,on-line, by people i dont seem to play my best game and never seem to end up a winner.
Does anyone else have this problem i know it is purely mental and would like to sort it out but cant. Anyone got any tips on how to stay focused when someone is watching you ?
It isnt the pressure as i play a lot of sports in front of lots of people and thrive on that but i just cant play poker with people seeing my hole cards !!!!!
I know the obvious thing is to say " just play normaly but i need help as i am otherwise a winning player !! " ( in that i win more money than i lose )

I've been playing poker professionally for ten years and I HATE when people watch me, or should I say, when they ask if they can watch.
I don't allow it, ...NEVER! There are a lot of players that don't mind when others watch them, but for me, it seems to make me lose focus... either they're talking to me or vice versa, and I'm missing wants going on during the game. I like to watch EVERY hand that is being played out not just the one's I'm involved in. So in saying that and feeling that way, You should not be distracted by anything or anyone! poker is a game that requires all your focus and attention, at ALL times. If you are having a hard time telling one of your buddies that you really don't want them to watch you, then say what I always say..." I get nervous when people watch me, It's not a personal thing... it's just me! They'll understand, eventually.

TO CHASEPOKER,
I would also like to add that this "annoying habit" you claim to have when others watch you play, (you said it makes you not play your best game)?
... It is their annoying habit, NOT YOURS.
I read your post again and realized that you were strictly talking about on-line play, while I was responding back to players watching me in a live game. It's much easier to control that type of situation when you're in a poker room opposed to somebody watching you play on-line.
That is tough! How can you stop them from watching... Unless you changed your poker name on the site in which you play?
Good luck chase, I hope your friends will respect your wishes and not bother you while you play. (I know how you feel, my friend constantly calls me when I'm playing and never wants to get off the phone)!!!

I just want to suggest that it may be a good idea to face your reaction to audiences objectively. IMO, it is a question of perspective: "They are watching me" vs "I play well enough to draw an audience." I think one idea has come through loud and clear from good players here on the forum, and that is there is an important mental side of the game. To improve as a player, it appears (I am hedging here) that card sense and mental toughness are both important. I would like to hear what the pros think about this, since I am just an improving player. The advantage of being a fish is that an audience following your play is flattering ... Your posts are interesting chasepoker, because you seem to be really "mining" your weaknesses with a view of addressing them, and IMO - generally - that is how you get better.

I find that if I am being watched, I get self conscious and feel embarassed about making moves which might look questionable to the casual observer.

Thus lets say that I decide to try to mix things up and do a little advertising so I'm going to raise with my A8 off in an attempt to fold out weak aces and get some good value later on if I have to show my hand - get some callers when I have big hands later on, etc. If somebody is watching me play this online, I feel a need to go into discussion as to why I'm playing this and justify that I'd usually fold this pig, etc, etc. And that throws me off my game. I also hate it when somebody pipes in with, "It was so obvious that he had pocket aces - why were you betting into him," etc. I know that I'm a good poker player, but when somebody erodes my confidence then I am a bad player and as a result, I never let anybody play "with" me. ... even though my play on the internet is strictly recreational and for small money.

I also used to get self concious about plays that aren't obvious. This used to extend itself to not wanting to showdown when I was confident I had the best hand, but my hole cards alone were not all that impressive. Simply put, I wanted people to be awed by my play.

Now, I "pump up" before a game, and as part of this routine, I tell myself that if the observers were in a position to judge, then they would be playing. If my opponents want to judge - Good. I've really taken a lot of Caro's table image advice to heart, although altering it to suit myself. These hands just serve as a bit of advertising while I rake in some cash.

For the most part, however, I just don't care what other people (outside of the game) think of my play anymore. The only person whose thoughts I really care about is my wife, and she's really more concerned with the bottom line than how exactly I play each hand.

By the way and way off subject, I have been exploring table talk lately (something I have never really done before), and would like to thank Mr. Caro for some of his writing on the subject. Using an either/or situation last week I was able to talk a King high into calling my bet with a straight flush. My god, that is a good feeling!!

Am I reading you right? You are worried that people who watch you play online can see your hole cards?

What web site allows spectators to see hole cards? This would be a serious security flaw and I wouldn't play a single hand on this site.

I know when spectating on Paradise Poker you can't see hole cards.

Surely I'm mistaken about your post,

Nope...we're talking about somebody in the room with you, peeking over your shoulder at the monitor.
